Smoke testing or build verification testing is a preliminary testing carried out with the aim of checking essential features of the application. It is the first step of testing and is carried out to identify more serious problems in the build of the software. The term ‘smoke’ is related to the term that stands for a short ‘puff’ to check if the software ‘smokes’ or explodes. Usually, smoke testing checks application availability, ability to navigate through the major interface, and the core functions to find defects visible in early stages of development.
