AWWA stands for American Water Works Association which is a standard that is given to the valves. These valves are designed primarily to control the flow of the water in underground pipelines. This type of valve is specifically designed for heavy pressure service. A gate valve generally is used to shut off the flow in the valve rather than for flow regulation. There is no obstruction in the flow path in this valve which results in very low flow resistance. It provides zero leakage. These valves operate either in fully open or fully closed position. When the gate valve is open, the disc will is completely removed from the flow path.
