What to Keep in Your Baby Diaper Bag?

When it comes to newborn babies there can be a lot of unfamiliar territories, especially if you are a first-time parent. Packing a diaper bag can be overwhelming because it feels like you need to pack half your house.

Your little one needs a lot of gear. A baby diaper bag will feel like more than just a bag - its convenience, freedom, and peace of mind combined into one. So, remember to choose a bag with lots of pockets because you need to fit all your baby’s stuff plus your stuff in it.

Remember to keep your diaper bag stocked and ready to go at all times. Then, you can have a stress-free outing with your baby.

Diaper Bag Essentials

You need to start by trying to figure out what to pack and what can be left behind? Mentally walk through everything you’ll want and need when you’re out with your little one. These are the things you should have on your diaper bag checklist, to begin with:

  • Diapers-

When you’re out, your baby will need a diaper every 2 hours. Add a few extras just to be safe.

  • Baby Wipes-

Try to look for a good travel pack, or you can keep your wipes moist in a plastic sandwich bag. They’re handy for wiping your baby’s bum, your hands, and the changing pad, especially if you used a public restroom.

  • Baby cream/ointments-

You can save space by using travel-sized tubes.

  • A Changing Pad-

Even if your diaper bag includes one, you might find you need something a little larger.

  • Empty sacks-

You can use these for soiled diapers, clothing, pacifiers, and even nipples.

  • Pacifiers-

If you use pacifiers, store them in a clean bag. Also, some extra bottle nipples to make sure everything is sanitary.

  • Burp Cloths/ washcloths

Pack as many as you think you’ll need, then add some more.

  • Hand Sanitizer-

You should always carry one to make sure you are safe and sanitized at all times.

  • Food-

Figure out how many feedings-worth you’ll need and pack accordingly, whether it’s infant formula and bottles, pumped breast milk, or baby food. Remember to include some water too.

  • Clothes-

When you’re out incidents like spit-ups, blow-outs, and leaky bottles happen. So, throw in a couple of extra pairs of clothes and socks for extra precaution.

  • Sunscreen and hat-

You’ll need something seasonally appropriate to block out the sun or cold. If your little one is 6 months and up, use some sunscreen if you are out and about in a stroller or visiting the park. Use a hat to protect your babies.

  • Light blanket-

No matter the season, it’s always good to keep an extra on hand for unforeseen breezes or drafty restaurants.

  • Toys-

Throw in whatever keeps your baby entertained - board books, rattle, teethers.

  • Some light snacks-

Pack something that won’t ruin their appetite, like puffs or Goldfish.

  • Band-Aids-

If you are with your kids, you’ll eventually end up at the playground. So, to make your little ones feel safer and better, pack some band-aids for their (potential) boo-boos.

  • Whatever you need-

Throw in your phone, extra money, keys, and essential contact info (such as emergency contact, pediatrician, sitter, daycare, etc.). This can come in handy if by chance you forget your purse or are just stepped out for a quick trip.

Tips for Packing a Diaper Bag

When you are packing a diaper bag, there are 3 important factors that you should always keep in mind:

1. How old is your baby?

If you are packing for a newborn baby, your diaper bag can be lighter since they rely on breastfeeding for nourishment. In this case, you can pack your diaper bag with fewer things. However, if you are packing for a toddler, you will need feeding bottles, baby formula packets, and a sippy cup, among other things.

2. How long will you be out?

When it comes to packing your diaper bag, the duration for which you will be out with your baby plays a crucial role. You will have to increase the number of diapers you pack depending on the amount of time you will be out, in transit, or leisurely. As mentioned before, you need to pack a diaper for every 2 hours you will be outside and carry some extra in case of emergencies.

3. Where will you be going?

Is it a picnic in the park? A car journey? A trip to the restaurant? A family dinner at a relative’s place? A train journey? It is an important question to consider before packing your diaper bag, as it may drastically alter your checklist. If you’re going on a journey to someplace and are using a vehicle for a while, you might want to carry some extra diapers, baby wipes, and powder. However, if you’re headed to a relative’s place, you may not feel the need to carry a diaper changing pad. You need to keep in mind that it also depends on your baby’s age and their habits which you know about.
