Probably, most of you out there must be aware of various lifestyle factors that add to infertility in both men and women. Overweight or underweight, having an improper diet, smoking, drinking, and abstain from physical activity are some of the most commonly known lifestyle factors that can lead to infertility. But, do you know the effect of sleep on your fertility? If not, stick to this blog as we are going to uncover the association between sleep and fertility here.

Sleep and Fertility

With a lack of sleep, fertility decreases in both men and women. Even a couple of sleepless nights can impact the production of hormones and stress response. According to the fertility experts at Dr. Sushmita Mukherjee’s IVF Center, the corresponding portion of the brain that stimulates hormones needed in sleep and wakefulness (cortisol and melatonin) also stimulates the hormones needed in reproduction.

The hormones that cause sperm development and likely cause ovulation are associated with your sleep-wake pattern. For example, the problem with the menstrual cycle is often seen in a sleep-deprived woman. Not getting sufficient sleep can disturb your monthly cycle and cause unpredictable periods, making pregnancy even more difficult.

Having said that, we would also like to inform you that a lack of sleep can give rise to many chronic diseases that may interfere with your fertility, such as diabetes, stress, high blood pressure, obesity, anxiety, and that’s just the beginning.

How Much Sleep Is Necessary?

With the end goal to make sure that your sleep does not interfere with your fertility, you should take nothing less than 8 hours of sleep per day. However, it is to be noted that oversleeping can also cause trouble to your fertility. According to research conducted on a group of women undergoing IVF, those who slept for 8 hours a day conceived babies more easily as compared to those who slept for 9 hours a day.
