Projectx 2 port to windows 7 download.
Hello, we are using USB to serial devices that allow the computer to have multiple COM ports. The ports are getting mapped incorrectly within Windows 7. After testing it does not seem to be driver dependent, but a function of Windows generating the issue. For example. COM ports in Device Manager will be listed and seemingly installed in sequential order COM 3, COM 4, COM 5, COM6. When sending data out of the port on the USB device Port 1 maps to Com 5, Port 2 maps to COM 3, Port 3 maps to Com 4 and Port 4 maps to Com 6. With eight port devices there are two boards/panels in the device each with four ports. One board will load with improper mappings while the other is mapped sequentially when checking the Ports versus the COM port assignments in Windows. In Device Manager the COM ports read 3-10. If the device is disconnected and then reconnected or drivers reinstalled the mappings can change further. We are running dependant software through these ports that have COM port #'s defined within the apps. If the box is removed the device will do one of two things, pickup the previous COM ports, but map them differently on the device or it will assigned higher COM ports as if the other device is still present, again with mappings potentially being off.
1. Is there anyway to manually assign ports (INI file for example) on existing Windows 7 boxes purchased when the device is installed or the device is unplugged and re-plugged in/reinstalled so it keeps the same port #'s and mappings?
2. Is there a way to ensure mappings are loaded correctly from the get go so port #'s and COM port #'s coincide without having to re-assign them manually in Device Manager?
Occasionally the device is installed correctly the first time around. Any help is appreciated as this seems to be abug in perhaps plug and play with port assignments.
Answers.
Open Device Manager. Then expand the entries of the ports. Right-click on the port you want to change and choose Properties. On the Port Settings tab choose Advanced. In the lower left is a dropdown where you can change the com port number assignment. Choose.
The behaviors are caused by the device drivers. In this case I assume that Windows 7 build-in COM drivers are loaded. However the driver may be not fully compatible with your device. If the above steps does not help, there are no other solutions.
