Hands On Review Of Next Generation Smartphone For New Sony Xperia 5

Sony returned a smaller Android. but small enough?

Sony has demonstrated its next-generation compact flagship phone at IFA 2019, one of which is Xperia 5.

This is not a follow-up to Xperia 1, but is placed side by side in a similar way to the "Xperia Compact" variant that Sony produced with its flagship device.

The Xperia 5 is not as compact as some people expect, but we have already tried the phone on IFA 2019 to share our first impression of the latest Sony Android devices.

Sony Xperia 5 Release Date And Price

In the week starting September 9, UK users will be able to book the device on Xperia 5. Xperia 5 can be purchased in the UK starting October 4.

We don't know if this phone will be available in the US or Australia. Sony has not disclosed the price of Xperia 5 in the UK, but we do know that it sells for 799 euros in Europe, so our price is about $880, 715 pounds.

Design And Display

The design language used by Xperia 1 is redeployed here to Sony Xperia 5, which has a high rectangular device that displays a 21:9 aspect ratio.

Sony uses a 21:9 aspect ratio because it sees it as an improved experience that offers more screens for watching videos or playing games. It first introduced the idea on Xperia 1, and it was copied by many competitors.

The screen on the device is a Full HD + (1080 x 2520) OLED with an aspect ratio of 6.1 inches, which is smaller than the Xperia 1. Although the screen sounds great on paper, the 21:9 aspect ratio does make it easier to hold in your hand.

However, it's not as small as the previous Sony Xperia Compact device, so if you want to use a compact device for smaller hands, you might want to try it yourself before you buy.

The back of the phone is glass, and the device has blue, back, gray or red. It's unclear which color will be available in which area, but red is particularly eye-catching as a unique shadow.

It's also a lightweight device weighing just 164 grams. You can't say the existing Xperia 1, and the Xperia 5 measures 158 x 68 x 8.2 mm, which is shorter and narrower than its competitors.

There is a power button on the right side of the device, including the fingerprint scanner - which is easy to reach when unlocking.

The phone also has an IP68 waterproof rating and should be resistant to water splashes.

Overall, the Xperia 5 feels like an advanced device that matches the look of the Xperia 1, but it's not clear whether it's really easier for people who like smaller devices.

Operating System And Specifications

Sony has confirmed that Android 9 Pie is the main software for Xperia 5, but we can safely assume that the company is working hard to install the newly released Android 10 software on the device.

Under the hood is the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset - the same as the Xperia 1. It is paired with 6GB of RAM, and during our short test time, it seems to be able to load the application quickly without any waiting.

The standard storage space on your phone is 128GB, and you can scale up to 512GB with a microSD card.

A nice feature included with the Sony Xperia 5 is support for its PlayStation DualShock 4 controller. This means you can connect the controller wirelessly to the handset, giving you more control over what's on the screen than touching a button.

Camera And Battery

Sony's triple 12MP camera is located at the rear of the device, similar to what we saw on the Xperia 1.

This means you will get a main wide-angle (f / 1.6, 26mm) camera as well as a super wide-angle catcher with a 130-degree field of view (f / 2.4, 16mm) and a telephoto lens (f / 2.4, 52mm) in portrait mode 2x optical zoom and data.

We have not been able to test this extensively, but this setup works well on Xperia 1, and we hope it will be the same on Sony Xperia 5.

Sony has not provided any estimates of the sustainable use of the Xperia 5 battery, but we know that the inside of the phone is a 3140mAh battery. When we conduct a comprehensive review, we will definitely push it to the limit.
