Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) is a popular species of tuna found in pelagic waters of tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide, and is often known as Ahi, a term from Hawaii. Although, mostly found in deep offshore waters, they are highly migratory and are capable of coming close to the shore when suitable conditions prevail.

Mid-ocean islands such as the Hawaiian archipelago, island groups in the Western Pacific, Caribbean and Maldives islands, Indian Ocean, as well as the volcanic islands of the Atlantic such as Ascension Island, often harbor Yellowfins. Commercial fishing for Yellowfin is usually carried out with trawl, pole, longline and purse seine gear.
