The toolings of the press brake are separated into two components. The punch tooling placed on the upper part of the ram are called punches and the lower tools on the workbench are called dies. Both parts work on the metal plate to complete the bent workpiece.
The process that which the punch of the press brake puts an impact on the plate of metal on the die is the process of bending. The ram is powered by various sources of power. The driving sources include hydraulic, mechanical and servo motors.
There are numerous types of punches and dies. You can increase the precision and efficiency of your bending by selecting the appropriate dies or punches. Standard size tools are easier to replace. Because the design of parts for tooling that are standard in size is uniform.
So it is not necessary to make many adjustments when replacing dies and punches. These custom die punch are kept in the same position to replace them conveniently. To fix the punches, upper parts of the press brake ram have to be clamped. The clamping mechanism can secure the punches to the correct position. The punches bend the metal plate in the direction of the ram.
Segmentation of dies can be utilized to aid in the bending of different-sized workpieces. Press brake toolings need precise and high precision. Particularly the accuracy of the punch tip and die shoulders. These parts are likely to directly touch the sheet metal during bending. Die or punches that are high-precision will also make adjustments easier in the process of installation.
Die types and punches
Press brake dies to include V-die, U-die, and Z-die. The most commonly used is the V-die. The minimum length of the flange is 4 times the thickness of the material.
Otherwise, the exact bending angle is not possible to determine. The different opening widths of V-die sets correspond to the punches. This permits the press brake to be bent at different angles and using different materials.
The three primary types of press brake punches can be divided into three categories three categories: straight punch; gooseneck punt and acute punch.
Consideration for Tooling Selection
Bending Material
It is essential to decide the kind of metal you want to bend. The thickness of the metal will determine the die's opening along with the bending radius, as well as the bending angle. For example, some steels have greater strength and higher resistance than others steels.
This resistance is referred to as the Tensile strength (UTS) of the metal. Different metals have different tensile strengths, so different molds are required. Additionally, it has to be taken into consideration that the length of the metal plate will determine how many toolings are required.
The V Radius and the Opening of the Material
If the thickness and the type of sheet metal is equal, then there is more than one opening size for V-die.
The sheet metal will not be lost in bending. The sheet will stretch when the inner radius is less than that of the sheet of metal. This can cause the workpiece to deform. Deformation will not occur in the case of a radius that is greater than the thickness. We should choose a radius that is smaller than the thickness of the sheet when selecting the V-die opening.
