Do you want to use your laptop at home or in your digging/planar/etc, or can you lecture and use it on campus? There is scientific evidence that students who take notes on paper can learn more.

Traditionally, students have purchased a 15.6-inch laptop as a desktop replacement. These machines are fast and inexpensive, but they carry a lot of weight and have a short battery life.

If you want to carry a laptop with you, look for a 10-inch to 12-inch laptop. Some models double as a touch screen tablet. Some people use pens or stylus to make limited notes, draw charts and annotate documents. Microsoft's Surface Go is a valuable contender.

A laptop with a 14-inch screen is a good compromise. The new models have thin bezels, so they are no larger than older 13.3-inch notebooks, and they usually have full HD (1920 x 1080) instead of HD (1366 x 768) screens. Most are small and light enough to carry at least part of the time.

You can compare 14-inch and 15.6-inch laptops at any good computer store or department store like John Lewis.
I think a 14-inch laptop is a good choice for most college students, but it may not be your best choice.

15.6in Option

If you decide to purchase a 15.6-inch desktop replacement, the IdeaPad 330S 15 is powerful. Lenovo offers two models, including a fast AMD Ryzen processor, 8GB of RAM, 256GB PCIe SSD, 1920 x 1080 pixel anti-glare IPS screen and a nice keyboard. The cheapest 81FB006QUK has a Ryzen 3 2200U rose pink case for £409.99, but for the midnight blue 81FB002LUK and Ryzen 5 2500U and Radeon Vega 8 graphics, it is worth £479.99.

These machines are very stylish, relatively light (1.87 kg) and good value for money. The screens are not very good and the battery life may be poor, but they are within your budget and should cruise anything you might throw them.

Laptop Repairer sells a version of the machine for £399, but it's only half the memory (4GB) and half the storage space (128GB), so it's not a good deal. Also, avoid the £379.99 Argos version with 4GB of memory and a 1366 x 768 pixel screen. However, Argos offers dozens of versions of the IdeaPad 330S, so you may find the version that works for you.

The HP Pavilion 15 is a better machine in some respects with a better screen and longer battery life (up to 11 hours). John Lewis has a version of the Intel Core i3-8145U - fast enough to meet your needs - plus 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD for £499.95. It is currently out of stock, but the models of other vendors are very similar.

14in The Laptop

The Pavilion family has been improved since HP split its PC and printer division into an independent company, HP, in 2015. Last year, due to the launch of the latest Pavilion laptop, its sales were almost the same as Lenovo's (56 million 58m). Last April. They have a more advanced look and feel, and their metal keyboard panels are distinguished by a geometric grid pattern (speaker grille) between the keys and the screen.

There are a number of slightly different versions of laptops that are sold in large quantities, such as the HP Pavilion 14 and Lenovo's IdeaPad 330S. This can be confusing, but if you focus on the specifications you care about, you can strike the best balance between processor speed, storage and price. For convenience, I am connecting to Laptop Repairer, but you can shop everywhere.

The best pavilions of less than £500 are the 14-ce2500sa (Core i3-8145U, 8GB, 512GB SSD) and the 14-ce1510sa (Core i5-8265U, 8GB, 128GB). Personally, I will consider the extra speed of the Core i5 unless you need extra storage space.

You can buy the 14-ce1507sa (Core i3-8145U, 8GB, 250GB SSD) for £449 and save £50. This is slower, but you should do what you need comfortably. However, if you download to 14-ce0593sa (Pentium Gold 4415U, 4GB, 128GB SSD) for £379, your performance will drop and you will not be able to upgrade your processor in the future.

With its yoga collection, Lenovo pioneered a 360-degree hinged laptop that can be rotated for tablet use. I still like orange (sorry, Clementine) 11.6in Yoga 700 I bought it for £339.99 in 2016: it's light enough to carry anywhere, but it can be backed up on a desktop computer for serious use. They are usually more expensive now. The cheapest I've seen today is £1.61 for 1.6-inch yoga, priced at £299.95, “reduced to clear” at John Lewis, and because of its slow speed on the Intel Celeron N4000 processor. Better options include Lenovo's slightly portable 14-inch touchscreen Yoga 530, which I assume is Pentee Gold at £379.99 and Core i3-8130U at £469.99. Laptop repairer also has this £469 model. It is suitable for active pens that are not provided.
