What is Random Packing and How Is It Used in Process Plants?

Random packing is one of the 3 primary devices used in mass and heat transfer applications. (The other 2 devices are structured packing and trays.) Like the other 2 devices, the primary purpose of random packing is to create a surface area for vapor / liquid contact so that Mother Nature (and Father Thermodynamics) can chemically separate. Chemical separation involves distillation, absorption, and separation.

S cube Mass Transfer is a manufacturer and supplier of Packing Random Packing, Pall Rings, And IMTP Packing Pall rings are the most common form of random packing.

How is Random Packing Applied in Process Plants?
In most chemical separation processes, the vapor is driven upwards in the column by heat and pressure while the liquid falls down under the force of gravity. There are 3 primary factors in the selection of random packing and they are capacity/pressure drop, efficiency. The larger the random packing the higher the capacity but at a lower efficiency cost. The smaller the packing, the higher the efficiency but the lower the capacity and the higher the cost. The design engineer must choose the right packing that provides the most economical balance capacity and efficiency.

Raschig Ring Packing - The first generation of its random packing is characterized as having the same height as the diameter. Due to the relatively low capacity, low efficiency and high cost (metallic) capacity of racing ring packing, its applications are generally limited to corrosive applications where the building material is ceramic or carbon/graphite. The rash ring has no internal support like “fingers” in pal ring packing when fabricated material is made in metal.

Pall Ring Packing – Consider pall ring packing as windows and / or finger racing rings. The development of pall rings was a major breakthrough in random packing. By punching a tab on the ring wall, he created an internal drip point that increased capacity and efficiency by 50% to 80% compared to rasching ring packing. Similar to rasching ring packing, pall rings are characterized by taking the same height as its diameter. Pall rings are most often used in absorption and distillation services.

High Performance Saddle-Ring - Saddle ring packing will replace pal rings to deliver better efficiency and capacity in the same bed height and diameter. This third generation of random packing with a focus was developed to create low aspect ratio packing; I.e. less than the nominal diameter of the packing. The low aspect ratio packing promotes the beneficial installation of a packed bed as the saddle ring thus establishes a more flat surface parallel to the vapor and liquid traffic. The potential for results increases when effective surfaces are maintained for vapor / liquid contact. These "ring" pallets provide more capacity and efficiency than ring packing. Applications include the use of atmospheric and high-pressure distillation, sour water strips, dimethanizers, dethanizers, acid sid gas removal, quenching towers and main fractionators.
