You’ve already received some fine advice from other members of the Quora community. Luckily for modern gardeners, the Internet is a great source of information. Some of it is good information founded on sound science. Some of it is hocus pocus founded on wishful thinking or ridiculous theories. The first step, as previously stated, is knowing what plant(s) you want to grow and then finding out as much as you can about how others have achieved the best results growing these same plants indoors. Another issue is scale: how many plants do you want to grow and how much space do you have to grow them — and how much money do you have to invest in products and supplies? You can find reputable sources among indoor growers, i.e., people who do not have a financial interest in promoting one product or system over another, but there is no substitute for research and critical thinking.
