How to Use a Cane for Better Balance?
One as part of falls prevention education we want to discuss on how to properly use a Walking Cane many times patients will come in with a cane that they've bought themselves and not know how to use it or how to correctly fit it for their height so that's what i'm going to go over today is how to appropriately fit it how to use it when walking and then how to also use it when going up and down the stairs when you're sizing a cane to you it's ideal to have an adjustable one with the pull and click buttons that way you can adjust the height so when you pull it up to yourself you want to stand tall right next to it with your arm down straight you don't want to look down at it but rather you want to stand up tall wherever your wrist bends is the height that you want the cane to be you can see this one's a little too tall for me so i'm going to adjust it down i'm going to take it down two notches standing tall and re-measure right where my wrist bends there should be a small bend in the elbow when you step forward you want it to be um moving with the leg that you want to help keep steady. So if you have let's say right knee pain or right knee or thigh weakness you want to hold it in your left hand you want it to be opposite of the weak or painful side because you want to shift your weight away from it and make it more of a natural pattern so i'm going to pretend that my right side is my weak side and the cane is going to go right with it and my opposite leg steps through cane and right leg and step through when you do this you don't want to reach forward because you don't want to bend and it should be right next to you only about maybe four to six inches out to the side and then it goes with your opposite leg and you step through lastly i want to show you how to use a cane on the stairs if there's a handrail available you always want to use the rail and put the k on the opposite side no matter what in an instance where you don't have a reeling you're still going to keep the cane opposite of your sore or weaker side so like before i'm going to pretend my right side is my weaker side and when you go up the stairs you want to lead with your good leg up with the good so that'll always go first and the cane is then staying with your weaker leg you bring the cane up and the weak leg comes together strong leg goes up cane and weak leg come together and when you reverse it it's just the opposite the cane is going to lead the way with your weaker leg and then bring your stronger leg down to it cane weak your leg and then your stronger leg right down next to it i hope you found this information helpful.
