Continue

As most of us will remember, puberty is a difficult and trying time. It is the period when our bodies grow and change at a rapid pace and our hormones seem to go haywire. It is no wonder why certain vitamins are so very important at this stage of life. If you are the parent of a teenager, you are probably looking for ways in which to ensure that your child makes it through these exasperating years relatively unscathed and in balance. Here is a list of the six most important vitamins for teenagers, most of which can be purchased in the form of supplements using the allowance that is provided by your health scheme.

Calcium

Calcium promotes strong and resilient bones. Did you know that a consistently high intake of calcium throughout your teenage years ensures that you will have stronger bones for the rest of your life?

Vitamin D

The amount of vitamin D that is found in food is quite limited. While most people get enough of it from the sun, growing teens may need an extra supplement. All teens should be getting at least  IU of vitamin D every day.

Vitamin A

Essential for ensuring a healthy immune system and maintaining good vision, a daily intake of micrograms is recommended for all people aged 14 years and older.

Omega 3

In general, Omega 3 is obtained by eating fish and is important for healthy brain development and maintenance. All teens should aim to consume at least Omega 3 (also often referred to as Docosahexaenoic acid) daily.

Probiotics

We all know how kids and teens love to eat sweets and junk food! This can often lead to digestive issues such as constipation or diarrhea. Luckily, these problems can be remedied by insisting that your kids take a quality probiotic on a regular basis. These probiotics promote a healthy gut and also help to ward off infections and restore normal bowel function.

Multivitamin

Multivitamins are great boosters for people of all ages. However, they are especially important for growing teens. A high-quality multivitamin should contain vitamin A, vitamin Bs, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, as well as folate.

While ensuring that your teenager receives all of these essential vitamins and minerals has a lot to do with their diet, sometimes you need that extra boost in the form of a supplement to really put your mind at ease. Remember to ensure that you have a good medical scheme behind you so that you won't have to worry about the cost of pricey vitamin supplements.
