It like any modern game in the sense that, you need the directional and action buttons for other things. Analogue sticks are crucial for camera and character movement. Additionally, suppose you did map movement to buttons, it would be limiting to 8 directions only and you won be left with enough buttons to map everything else to. Don do this! It will cause severe limitations to your gameplay and experience.

Do yourself a favour and get a decent controller that you can hold properly, or do the keyboard and mouse fix as suggested above. If you a gamer, which I assume you are since a new person on the gaming scene wouldn even try DS, then you must have an actual 360 or PlayStation controller laying around? Or anything with analogue sticks really. Basically, if it has a usb connection or is wireless, like PS3 onwards, it can be connected to your PC to be used.
