Peaceful, rustic Berkeley is a charming fishing community where life is sweet and the people friendly. All that is about to change. After losing her childhood farm to the bank, local beauty Rene decides to leave town and head for the big city. Suddenly, an avalanche of meteorites races through the sky, bombarding the town and bringing an otherworldly infection. Departing is going to be much more difficult than she had planned. The living dead are awakened and Rene is now caught in a nightmare of zombies hungry for human flesh. She manages to find salvation in a small isolated farm house owned by the town loony, Marion. There she is met with four other desperate survivors. Together they battle their way through a plague of walking dead and discover that there is more transpiring than just an infection.
A quaint Australian fishing village is overcome by meteorites that turn its residents into the ravenous undead, leaving a small group of those unharmed to find a way out.
Zombie-cum-alien infestation horror doesn't take itself seriously, to its credit, but loses its way badly.

It's certainly a good start where originality is concerned that for the first 10 minutes of this I was puzzled as whether I was watching the film I thought I was. Indeed, fairly light-hearted drama with overtones of comic-style music confused the bejesus out of me for long enough until I saw the first meteorite in flight. I was then reminded of the Night of the Living Dead homages in presence here, which assured me this was the right film.

The story in Undead is an expansion of the meteorite side-story of NOTLD, whereby an alien invasion involving rocks, fish, rain and a mysterious pendant (Don't ask) are responsible for turning the locals into mindless zombies.

You can already tell there's a distinct aspect of comedy here, and for the most part when it is trying to be funny, Undead genuinely succeeds in proving a laugh or 2. The violence is played for exaggeration, and is certainly gory enough, but somehow manages to be amusing at the same time. It's a credit to the makers that their sense of violence gives us a giggle, rather than just repulsing us.

For a good half an hour to an hour, this movie holds the above formula pretty well, entertaining us solidly and not boring us. The characters are all fairly stereotypical and overblown, but this is intentional.

However, the movie falls down when it goes from zombie comedy splatter flick to pseudo-sci-fi thriller.

It basically loses its way and doesn't really end, it just kind of fizzles out into nothingness.

There's little more I can add; decent for a while but then loses it.

Ah well. I just rented this movie online and my overview of Undead is...

This movie showed me some promise of entertainment as I was anticipating more of a Sci-fi horror with only a some comedic undertones, with a minimal amount of Science Fiction necessary for the story. It started out somewhat humorous in a retro "Mars Attacks" sort of way. The made-for-T.V. music score was rather irritating and should have been minimized because what that would have done was perhaps make it scarier.

The CGI and special effects were up to par with some pretty bloody moments. Some of the action scenes were questionable but these scenes needed to happen in order to break the ice during the uneventful moments of this movie. It did have some comedic moments which implied that the writers at least tried with Undead.

The town loony "Marion" didn't really seem like a loony at all. He was way too stoic, reserved and settled to be labeled as such, though it was funny to see him punch some fish in his flashback. When it came to the battles between the zombies and the survivors, the zombies were quick to rush in, but it seemed they just stood there waiting to get shot or decapitated. As for the beauty queen "Rene", she stereotypes what I call the "token hot survivor chick" who can shoot, and maim zombies with skill.

The Sci-Fi part was so overwhelming that it overshadowed the comedic side until the point where this movie had a period of drought about halfway. It definitely clashed with the horror aspect right when the group of survivors were driving up to that mile high barricade. That was the point where I was starting to get bored. The CGI on the Space Aliens was acceptable but the whole concept of their presence placed this movie on one giant tangent.

At that point it was more about space aliens than zombies. But the transition and connection between the two just don't mix as it made for a giant clash. From what I saw, the movie is not scary what so ever. There is no moment of suspense, (except for maybe the beginning if you call it suspense).

Overall the story just felt like an experiment, but Undead really fell flat without any redemption. I don't really recommend this movie but it does have its moments that make me wish it was more consistent in entertain-ability. A campy, low-budget Romero homage that's badly in need of editing.
