The CFL announced its 2014 schedule on Wednesday and the Montreal Alouettes will once again open the regular season on the road this year, this time against the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday, June 28. Less than a week later, the Alouettes will host their 2014 home opener on Friday, July 4 when the B.C. Lions visit Percival Molson Stadium for a 7:00 p.m. start. Fans can get used to the Friday night lights this summer as the Alouettes will open the weekend five times with Friday evening home games from July 4 through September 7, before shifting over to Sunday afternoon games for the autumn season, plus the annual Holiday Monday tilt on Thanksgiving. Montreal fans wont have to wait long to finally meet the Ottawa REDBLACKS, as the Alouettes newest -- and now closest -- rivals will be in town on June 20 for a pre-season tune-up, before visiting again on Friday, August 29 at 7:30 p.m. After a nearly 10-month wait, the Alouettes will be eager to avenge their 2013 CFL East Division Semi-Final loss to Hamilton when the Tiger-Cats visit Percival Molson Stadium on September 7 for the first meeting of the season between the two Eastern rivals. Montreal lost its first three games to begin the season, but has rebounded to take three points from its last three matches. Opara made a career-high 18 appearances last season after joining Sporting from San Jose in midseason, but now head coach Peter Vermes will have to replace the 25-year-old along the back line. One player who Vermes can rely upon is goalkeeper Erik Kronberg, who is making the most of his first season as the starting netminder after spending eight years as the number two, first to Kevin Hartman and then Jimmy Nielsen. "It always is tough for players like that to be able to follow in somebody elses footsteps," Vermes said of Kronbergs emergence this season. "But I truly believe that hes starting to forge his own path, and I think people are starting to see that he has qualities that are important to our team as well. Hes going to continue to grow as a keeper, and thats what we need him to do."
