ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- Former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez was indicted Thursday on first-degree murder and weapons charges in the death of a friend whose bullet-riddled body was found in an industrial park about a mile from the ex-players home. The six-count grand jury indictment charges Hernandez with killing 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, a semi-professional football player from Boston who was dating the sister of Hernandezs girlfriend. Hernandez, 23, pleaded not guilty to murder and weapons charges in June, and he is being held without bail. He had a brief court appearance in Attleboro on Thursday afternoon. Afterward, his lawyer Michael Fee said the defence was pleased to be on a path to a jury trial and was looking forward to testing the prosecutions evidence. "There has been an incredible rush to judgment in this case," and the state doesnt have enough evidence to prove the charges, he said. Hernandez signed a contract last summer worth $40 million but was cut by the Patriots within hours of his June 26 arrest, when police led the handcuffed athlete from his home as news cameras rolled. He could face life in prison if convicted. The Bristol County grand jury also indicted two others in the case: Hernandez associate Ernest Wallace and Hernandezs cousin Tanya Singleton. Wallace is charged with accessory to murder after the fact. Prosecutors have said he was with Hernandez the night Lloyd died. Singleton is charged with criminal contempt for refusing to testify before the grand jury, Bristol County District Attorney Samuel Sutter said. She has been jailed in Massachusetts since Aug. 1. A recent affidavit said that, after Lloyds killing, Singleton bought Wallace a bus ticket. Carlos Ortiz, who faces a weapons charge in district court connected to the case, was not indicted. Sutter said Hernandezs arraignment in Superior Court, where the case now moves, could come next week. A jogger found Lloyds body on June 17 in a North Attleborough industrial park. His mother, Ursula Ward, called him a loving son who never hurt anyone. Prosecutors say Hernandez orchestrated Lloyds killing because he was upset at him for talking to people Hernandez had problems with at a nightclub days earlier. They say Hernandez, Wallace and Ortiz picked Lloyd up at his home in Bostons Dorchester neighbourhood early on June 17 and then drove to the industrial park. Shortly before his death, authorities say, Lloyd sent his sister text messages asking if she had seen who he was with. "NFL," he wrote. "Just so you know." Moments later, authorities say, Lloyd was dead after gunshots rang out near a warehouse after he apparently got out of the car for what he thought was a bathroom break. Authorities have not said who fired the shots, but according to court documents, Ortiz told police in Florida that Wallace said it was Hernandez. Wallace earlier pleaded not guilty in district court to a charge of accessory to murder after the fact. Ortiz pleaded not guilty to the firearm charge. A judge ordered Wallace held on $500,000 bail and Ortiz held without bail. Authorities have said they havent found the murder weapon, which they believe was a .45-calibre Glock pistol. But they recovered a magazine for .45-calibre bullets in Hernandezs Hummer as well as ammunition of the same calibre inside a condo he rented in Franklin, Mass. Prosecutors say they have video surveillance from Hernandezs home showing him before and after Lloyds killing holding what appears to be a Glock. Authorities also recovered a shell casing that matched those found at the homicide scene after tracking the rental car Hernandez was in the night Lloyd died. Since then, Boston police have asked police in Hernandezs hometown of Bristol, Conn., for their help with the probe into Lloyds homicide as well as a 2012 double homicide near a Boston nightclub. A Connecticut police lieutenant said authorities searched the home of Hernandezs uncle, seizing an SUV sought in the double killing that had been rented in Hernandezs name. Two men died in the July 2012 shooting in Bostons South End, with witnesses reporting that gunfire came from inside a grey SUV with Rhode Island tags. Boston police havent reported any arrests in the deaths of 29-year-old Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu and 28-year-old Safiro Teixeira Furtado and wont comment on whether Hernandez is a suspect. Hernandez is also facing civil litigation after a Connecticut man filed a lawsuit asserting the former player shot him in the face in February after they argued at a Miami strip club. Alexander Bradley, who says he lost an eye, told police at the time he didnt know who shot him. Also Thursday, Hernandezs lawyers asked an Attleboro judge to order the state to stop "deliberately misleading or making false statements" to potential witnesses. They claim detectives visiting a potential witness at a Connecticut prison to interview him told the man this month they were there "to help Aaron out." Sutter called it an allegation and said he hadnt yet reviewed the defence motion. When approaching any playoff game, especially a deciding game or Game 7, it is vital that the officiating crew be well prepared mentally and physically. In this case, that process would actually begin at least a day before the game when the officials left home and travelled to Boston (they might have also anticipated or even been assigned to Game 7 prior to Game 6 being played in Montreal. In any event they would have likely watched that game closely on television). While the officials are responsible for their personal preparation and readiness, the series supervisor (in this case, Kris King) also has some responsibility to get the crew mentally prepared in a meeting he conducts at noon on the day of the game. He, of course, cant work the game for them so his job is more like that of a coach and motivator. From almost the opening puck drop key decisions were made on calls and non-calls that made this objective almost impossible to be maintained and achieve success. On the very first shift, Brad Marchand caught Michael Bournival with a high-stick to the head just inside the Montreal blue line that went un-penalized. Marchand then received the first penalty at 6:18 of the game for goalie interference assessed by referee Jackson. On this play, it was Andrei Markov of the Canadiens that cross-checked Marchand in the neck and caused the Bruins player to fall through the crease and contact Carey Price. The first penalty call is often crucial to set the standard and this one clearly sent the wrong message. These decisions set a difficult standard for the referees to maintain as it appeared the game was being worked differently from end of the ice to the other. It only took seven seconds into the second period when Brad Marchand was whistled for stopping hard at the crease and penalized for a snow-shower on Habs goalie Price. These calls are typically something that needs to be addressed early in a series and not in game seven. It would be at this juncture that some "game management" as I described in yesterdays column could be used to the refs advantage. Then at 17:06, David Krejci had his lower glove hand slashed by Lars Eller on the back-check as Krejci was attempting to redirect a centering pass from Torey Krug. Krejci had words with referee Jackson when no call was made. So now we move to the Johnny Boychuk interference penalty that was called with 4:31 remaining in regulation time of Game 7. Given all of the above events, plus the fact that Bournival did not attempt to skate around Boychuk in addition to some embellishment on the play, it would have been the appropriate time for the referee to keep his arm down and allow the play to continue.
