Sweating is a natural function performed by the human body. It helps in regulating the temperature of the body. Normally every person whether he is a man or woman sweats while performing any physical activity. However, sometimes due to a threatening situation a person starts sweating. The common areas affected by sweating are armpits, hand palms, soles of the feet, and face. Sweating is essential for the body, however excessive and minimum sweating both are harmful to the body. In the absence of sweating the body is at the risk of overheating, whereas excessive sweating psychologically affects the body.

Excessive sweating is also known as hyperhidrosis is an embarrassing situation for a person. You would have seen lots of people using a handkerchief for removing sweat from their face, or some people white lines marked on the backside of their clothes. As it is not possible to change the clothes every time while a person is away from home, the situation is embarrassing for him. Interestingly there are some medical treatments for excessive sweating offered by dermatologists in Melbourne and throughout the world. Some of these treatments are:

1. Botulinum Toxin: In this treatment, the person is given the injection of botulinum toxin A (Botox). It is the same medicine as used for the treatment of wrinkles. It is FDA approved treatment for excessive sweating. Some dermatologists use this treatment even on palms and soles of hands and feet respectively. This injection controls the flow of a chemical in the human body responsible for activating the sweat glands. A person suffering from excessive sweating is given a series of injections. The results last for twelve to fifteen months.
2. Iontophoresis: Here a person has to place his hands and feet in a shallow tray of water minimum for twenty to thirty minutes. During this period an electric current of low intensity flows across the water. A person undergoing the treatment doesn’t realize the flow of current in the water. It is believed that the electric current restricts the flow of sweat. It is a long-term treatment and a person has to repeat the treatment several times during a week, after which he stops sweating. An interesting feature of this treatment is that if a person learns the process of iontophoresis, he can buy its machine and perform the treatment at home. One thing that is important to mention about this treatment is that although it is safe, as it uses an electric current it is dangerous for pregnant women, people with pacemakers, or metal implants or suffering from cardiac problems.
3. Anticholinergic Drugs: If you are tired of undergoing the treatments like the use of antiperspirants, Botox or iontophoresis, then your dermatologist might suggest you the treatment of anticholinergic drugs. These drugs deactivate the sweat glands. This treatment has however some side effects like dry eyes and dry mouth, heart palpitations, blurred vision, etc
