This guide was updated in March 2022 to ensure that all products tested and approved by the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Appliances and Cleaning Products Lab are in stock, readily available and priced accurately. We have added information on WiFi connectivity and details about how we test dishwashers to the specifications.

When your dishwasher is working well, it can be a great helper in the kitchen that you don't even notice. It quickly cleans up dirty dishes when you load it. It's annoying to have to pre-wash (and rewash) your dishwasher every day if it doesn't work. Drying dishes, glassware, and cookware. You know when it's time to replace your dishwasher if you are doing all the hard work.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Home Appliances and Cleaning Products Lab tests new countertop and full-size dishwashers every day to determine which are the best and easiest to use. Each machine is tested in the exact same manner. Our tests are adapted to industry-standard methods for better results. To find out how dishwashers stack up against the most frustrating issues, we also measure how many items they can hold, how easy it is to load and unload them, and how thorough their drying cycles are. We tested 17 dishwashers over the course of our latest test. This took us four months and 374 hours.

You may be looking to renovate your entire kitchen, or just replace one appliance. Finding the right dishwasher can seem daunting if you don’t know where to start. There are many options https://www.buyerhead.com online and at Home Depot, even if you're a loyal brand.

The This Old House Reviews team has carefully reviewed the best-selling and most popular built-in dishwashers from several major retailers. We have also read hundreds of customer reviews and identified the standout features and arrived at the top five dishwashers in 2022.

01. Smart Dishwasher with AutoDos

Our tests of performance and ease-of-use always place the Miele dishwashers at the top of our list. The Miele dishwasher is stylish and has hidden top controls. It's also a great workhorse for cleaning. AutoDos works with Miele’s PowerDisk. This dispenses the right amount of detergent to the cycle, lasts up to 20 washes, and there is no need to remember how much cleaner to add each time. With its adjustable racks, shelves, fold-down tines, and padded stemware grips, the dishwasher is easy to load. The 3D top cutlery tray keeps flatware from nipping for easier cleaning and is deep enough to hold small bowls or ramekins. It can slide from side to side, providing more room for tall stemware in its rack below. This feature was first seen in an older model we loved and still use in our Cleaning Lab.

The QuickIntenseWash cycle cleans a heavy-soiled load in less than an hour. The control panel is easy to use and clear. These performance features also translate into energy savings. The Miele dishwasher comes with EcoStart, which allows you to set the dishwasher to run at the lowest utility rates. There is also an EcoTech Heat exchanger, which captures heat from the dishwasher and transfers it to the water supply. Smart dishwashers are also available. It can be used remotely via the Miele app. It's easy to see why it has been awarded the Good Housekeeping Seal.

02. Gallery Fully Integrated Dishwasher

The Frigidaire appliances have a reputation for being very efficient and easy to use. This Gallery dishwasher has a 4.3 star rating from over 1,700 reviews. This machine is extremely affordable and cleans and dries quickly. It also comes with many high-end accessories. It is sleekly hidden and has an easy-to-use control panel. Once programmed, it will select your preferred cycle and other options in just one touch. For greater energy savings, this dishwasher can wash half your loads on either the top or bottom racks.

Nice perks at this price include a fingerprint-resistant stainless steel front, cushioned stemware holders, adjustable water pressure for the type and soil of the load, an NSF-certified sanitize option and (because it's so quiet) a light beam that projects on the floor to let you know when the cycle's complete. This model is priced at a reasonable price because it does not have a top-level flatware tray, WiFi capability and isn't as quiet as others. Despite these limitations, the model's great cleaning capabilities are not affected.

03. Smart Dishwasher, QuadWash and TrueSteam

The LG dishwashers performed so well in our tests, that we use the same model at Good Housekeeping Test Kitchen and give it a thorough workout. We were impressed with the cleaning results, and it was easy to load. However, we would have liked for the cycles to be a little faster. The innovative model features four lower spray arms than most models (which have two -- hence the nickname QuadWash). They spin and pivot with water pressure, so water is directed towards the corners. TrueSteam technology from LG fills the tub with steam during the prewash and main wash sections of the cycle to clean crusty and baked-on soils better and eliminate water spots. You can also use it to gently clean delicate, but fragile crystal that is in need of freshening. This model is easy to load and includes a top-tier tray as well as a flatware basket in its bottom rack. It has a heating element to dry the items faster.

Smart Diagnosis by LG allows you to download additional cycles to your machine. It also helps to solve problems such as a dishwasher not starting. You will be notified via your smartphone, Alexa, or Google Assistant when the cycle has ended.

04. Built-In Dishwasher With Stainless Steel Tub

When we test dishwashers in our Cleaning Lab, one of the most important features is their capacity. We pay particular attention to whether racks can hold larger dishes or trays. The KitchenAid dishwasher features a large second rack, which can be adjusted to hold tall items such as platters or stand mixer bowls. It also has a removable basket for your cooking tools. The dishwasher's ProWash cycle adjusts water temperature and time based on soil detected by its sensors. It can also be programmed to start later so that you have more flexibility or to take advantage of lower utility costs. You can use it at any time of the day, thanks to its quiet operation. One reviewer said that they even had to "check if it was actually working!"

The dishwasher is simple to use and very easy to program. It has only five cycles and six options, making it ideal for busy cooks who need to get things done quickly. We like the dry options to get better results with plastics and spot-free glassware. The stainless steel and black finishes have top controls that enhance the clean appearance. They are both resistant to fingerprints and smudges, and require only a soft, damp cloth for cleaning.

05. Smart Dishwasher With Hidden Controls

This updated model of the GE model that we tested has the same great features. The innovative bottle jets allow you to clean the interiors of baby bottles, water bottles, and vases. Special deep-clean silverware jets now send water up through the flatware basket to better remove stuck-on foods. The large openings allow for chunky flatware to fit right in.

It is one of the quietest dishwashers that we have tested at just 39 decibels. Stainless steel inside and out (It's fingerprint-resistant! This model has steam for gentler cleaning, a 12-hour delay wash option and WiFi connectivity. It also features a flatware basket on the bottom rack that can be separated for easy loading.

The new model comes with an app that allows users to check the status of their cycle, monitor rinse aid levels, and reorder detergent directly from their mobile devices. We love that the tines on the lower rack of GE are far enough apart that they can accommodate deep and curved plates.

06. 800 Series Dishwasher With CrystalDry

This Bosch dishwasher will dry your plastic containers, measuring cups, and water bottles that make up a large portion of your load. The Bosch dishwasher can dry plastics, unlike other dishwashers that leave them wet. This means that you will need to dry them by hand before putting them away. The dishwasher uses special CrystalDry chambers that contain minerals that convert the damp dishwasher air into dry heat. This heat is then pumped back into dishwasher to speed up drying. The minerals are re-heated by a small heating element so that they are ready for the next loads. They never need to be replaced. This option takes 30 minutes and is very energy-efficient.

It cleans well, can hold large loads, and is quiet, just like other Bosch dishwashers. A third rack that is extra deep can hold small bowls, lids, and large utensils such as whisks. There's also a red light on the floor that lets you know when the dishwasher is on (trust us, it won't be audible), and a small compartment at the top rack to catch detergent tablets while they are being dispensed.

07. Top Control Dishwasher

This fingerprint-resistant stainless steel beauty from Maytag is a quality build. This top-control dishwasher has a steam sanitize feature that kills bacteria in food soils. According to Maytag, dual power filtration eliminates stuck-on foods. Dishes no longer require a long soak. It did a good job of grinding up food particles and filtering them out in our tests, but we found that it occasionally made a lot of noise when large food pieces got caught.

The dishwasher comes with a flatware basket on the bottom rack. The third rack is ideal for flatware. It also fits mugs and bowls, according to our tests. A delayed start feature on the Maytag dishwasher allows you to set it up to run overnight when there is no one in the kitchen. It also makes it easy for lower
