About This Game

Tombeaux is a short first-person exploration game set in a historically accurate 3D environment. Developed as a solo art, design, and research project by Dave Beck, this interactive historical experience investigates the convergence between cultures and the environment across a few hundred years of midwestern American history. Through exploration, the player discovers various unique objects, environments, and narratives, all of which cause reflection upon our history and our future.

Unique points about the game:
  • Realistic exploratory world
  • Historically researched and presented narrative and events, meant to be both educational and contemplative
  • Environment transforms in reaction to progress in game
  • Game Audience: All ages, including non-gamers and gamers
  • Game Style/Type: Atmospheric, Story-rich Walking Simulator (minimal controls and mechanics, with a larger focus on story and environment)
  • Focus Issues: The human nature to desire control, environmental awareness, and historical consequence
  • The game is meant to be an artistic experience & concept for the player, lasting roughly 30-60 minutes
  • Solo Project by Dave Beck

*Dave Beck will be donating 100% of the profits from Tombeaux right back to protecting the river which it is based upon. The donation will be made to the St. Croix Watershed Research Station in Minnesota, in order to continue to support research on the river and the Artist at Pine Needles Program, from which this game was first envisioned.

Note on Partial Controller Support: After navigating the Unity Launcher that appears when starting the game with a keyboard and mouse, Tombeaux has full controller support within the game itself b4d347fde0

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!!!!. So I went into this thinking it would be another Drizzle Path type deal where you wander around the countryside looking at scenery and just kind of zoning out--and in the beginning, it seemed like that. I was bored for the first couple chapters until I realized what the game was actually about, and when I did, it honestly gave me some FEELINGS. I may have cried a little.

This is more of a documentary\/learning experience than an actual game. You don't solve any puzzles; you're just learning about the St. Croix River and how it changes over time. I know this sounds really dry when I'm summarizing but I can't adequately convey how valuable this is to see and experience, because--catch 22--if you don't see it yourself you won't really get it. It's one thing to think about deforestation and the theft of native land in the abstract, but when you're confronted with it through a VR-type platform, it really hits you in the gut.

I don't know, I'm still trying to gather my thoughts about this game, but I will say that you should check it out. It's super short so you can even do it on a lunch break or while you're waiting for your laundry or something. Apparently (according to some other reviewer) some of the proceeds from the game go to help the St. Croix, and I think that's reason enough to throw it in your shopping cart.. A short and (bitter)sweet dive into the American history mostly form nature's point of view. You'll get to watch how the last few centuries have treated a beautiful river area that is full of tiny, easily missable details. You main objective is just to wander around and pick up items that trigger story snippets that - as far as I understood - were written or said by real people of that age. All in all the game seems to put a lot of value on historical accuracy, which is certainly a refreshing thing to see in a video game. And when all of the profits made from this game are even donated to environmental charity, I can only recommend giving this walking simulator a try!. Pure walking sim that's less than 30 minutes long. Well intentioned and has good voice acting plus some historical accuracy, but everything's presented via a "white people and technology bad, native americans and nature good" filter. And wait till you hear the part where "Jeff Olson" talks about being a "merican, brah". If it wasn't for the in your face agenda it could have been OK, but there's really no reason to even bother with this. You can get a much more interactive and well balanced account of the impact of European settlement on the Midwest at any library.. Educational, environmental, walking simulator.
Explore a small, but well crafted, river in the American north.
I really like that the proceeds are going to saving the river.
Rad.
