The Spectrum Retreat is a challenging, first-person puzzle game set in the near future. You awake at The Penrose hotel, a peaceful yet unsettling refuge from the outside world. As a valued guest, your existence is embedded into the corridors and guest rooms of The Penrose.

Exploration of the striking art-deco hotel will begin to uncover the mysteries of both The Penrose and the uncertainties surrounding your current stay. Simple mechanics, but deviously complex as you play further in. Get out the pen and paper, you're gonna need them for some of the more complex puzzles :). Lots of the reviews talk about how it mixes narrative and puzzle solving together, but it keeps them almost entirely separate. There are "flashbacks" and small documents you can read in the puzzles to flesh out the playable characters story but they are repetetive and don't add much. There are small collectibles in the hotel sections that give you the backstory but it pieced together out of order over the couurse of the whole game.

You walk slowly (really really slowly) around a hotel in the narrative portions to unlock puzzle chambers, the game just tells you where to go and what the codes to open doors are. The narrator babies you the entire way, and if you stray off the main path just to look around, she babies you harder. The voice acting is fine, it's just that the script is not good

Once youre into the puzzle sections it's just a matter of putting things in the right places, very little thought is needed to get through most rooms. But theres always the chance you'll delete a colour you needed or get trapped with no way back, meaning you have to go into the menu to restart the room. This is just bad puzzle design, you should never be stuck in the middle of a solve.

I kept on playing passed the point of boredom because i knew they would introduce new mechanics into the puzzle rooms that i thought might make it more challenging. But even after adding gravity shifting, the puzzles were still just as mundane. Steam has my playtime at 2.9 hours but it felt so so much longer.

If youre looking for something to scratch this itch, my reccomendation is The Witness.. Warning for achievement hunters: Only 15 out of 29 achievements for this game are working properly. The rest are un-achievable, and some that they have planned are outright ridiculous.

The developers posted in December that they would be fixing this in "the coming weeks" on the discussion page, and have been radio-silent ever since.

I will update and possibly change my recommendation when this update eventually rolls out.. The baby child of The Stanley Parable + Portal. A rough-around-the-edges logic puzzler, but the story elements are very compelling and well written. A worthwile purchase.. This game is a beautifully crafted masterpiece, yet creates an eerie atmosphere that could through off anyone.
It's very narrative driven but the puzzels is the main area in which you will spend your time. The progression system hits the sweet spot, and the final puzzel was extremely good. The fragments of story scattered through are a nice touch in the puzzles. Altogether a top quality game, would recommend. As an okay puzzle game with a fun mystery reveal, I'd say this is worth a playthough, particularly since it's only around 3 hours long. Essentially you are moving colors around, which you can either store on a block or hold it to let you walk through walls of that color.


The major problem with this game is that there are constant hard fail states where you are forced to restart the level, which is particularly and acutely apparent on the final level where it takes just forever to get to the actual puzzles. This is exacerbated by the molasses walking speed accompanied by the ice skates you are apparently wearing. It'll take forever to get around, and when you want to stop, don't worry, you'll slide right into that instant death pit and have to meander your way back. The game ever starts to acknowledge this near the end, when it just teleports you past the boring bits. At 3 hours the game begins to overstay it's welcome, it could be a bit less boring in the first hour, and hard fail states really break the pace, otherwise take a crack at it.. Honestly an enjoyable game, albeit a bit short. Took roughly 6 hours to beat it, and I was by no means rushing to finish it, just went at a steady pace. For the current price tag ($12.99) I would say eh, maybe wait till it is on sale as it is a bit short. There are other games (antichamber), (the witness) that get you a little more bang for your buck, but this game is good none the less.
