German Captain Reichhardt commands a very special platoon of Waffen SS troops who are selected for their ability to speak English and infiltrate American lines. Reichhardt's Raiders are known by GIs to specialize in setting traps to capture American officers for interrogation, while killing any enlisted men taken with the officers. Lt. Hanley is captured by the Raiders and taken to a temporary holding area while Reichhardt leaves to capture more officers. Before dying however, Hanley's driver is able to tell Sgt. Saunders what happened to Hanley. Saunders and a couple squads of men then set off to get Hanley and the other officers back. Saunders and his men do manage to capture Reichhardt with his small squad of SS men, but Saunders has no idea which of them is Reichhardt, and the Germans aren't telling. Saunders has to figure out which SS man is Reichhardt and how to find out where he is holding the American officers. Watching this play out is pure Combat! joy, and as a bonus, we also get to see a young 34 year old Leonard Nimoy in the role of GI Private Baum.

"The Raider" is a story about American versus German intelligence. When Lieutenant Hanley is captured by Captain Reichhardt and his SS Raiders, White Rook must rescue him.

Reichhardt normally takes no enlisted prisoners but when he violates his own rule, a single clue is provided as to the general direction the SS Raiders are heading. After tracking the SS Raiders down, White Rook along with the White Pawn squad, put on a real show of force.

Saunders & Corporal MacGowan (well played by Martin E. Brooks) create blunt conflict and in so doing throw the Germans off balance. "The Raider" is full of what made audiences admire and respect Vic Morrow as Sergeant Saunders. One might think the southern expression "Get Er' Done" came from watching Saunders in action from week to week.

Director John Peyser did a fine job with this episode; especially a mid-episode barrage, which is among the best display of firepower in the entire Combat TV series. Close-ups capture genuine fear in the SS men.

Writers' Lenard & Carneol did their homework on military intelligence in putting "The Raider" together. The plot is excellent and the extent to which the Germans speak English is frightening, as though you could never feel secure the language would shield what you were saying in the company of Germans.

"The Raiders" will keep you thinking and guessing. And watching the Germans get a taste of American big city culture during the final stages is also very amusing.
