Mankind discovers the secret of 'slipgates' called teleporters. However, they're misused by some strange force code-named 'Quake', which uses the slipgates to send hordes of warriors to earth to take over the whole world. A marine special unit, to which you belong, is instructed to seek and kill 'Quake' and his minions - somehow 'Quake' knew about the plan and erased the whole unit - except for - surprise! - you. You throw a round of shells into the shotgun, sharpen your axe and engage to the strange and ancient worlds of 'Quake's realm. You learn that 'Quake' is actually Shub-Niggurath, a hideous demon and witch-goddess, and that the monsters are her breed! You decide to collect the four runes of magic to find Shub and kick his god-forsaken ass!
QUAKE is a great game, the problem is is that it fails to compare with ID's previous FPS hit, "DooM" For the year 1996, the graphics in QUAKE are amazing. The music is creepy and atmospheric, but the sounds over all are a little blah. Doom's graphics and sounds where on par for it's year, Quake succeeds in graphics, but fails in sounds. The levels are well built, but sometimes it gets slow paced, boring and annoying. The game is great, and it's worth checking out, but don't expect anything better than Doom.

Just enjoy the first 2 episodes of Quake.

But don't expect much from the 3rd and 4th, they get a little blah around the end, which is unfortunate because in most games the ending gets better and better, the final boss is a great anticlimax, but this game is great, and you should play. If it were'nt for the existence of Duke-3D during that time, Quake simply might have been the best single player game at the time, despite its somewhat mediocre single player campaign when compared to the former. The revolutionary new engine certainly was'nt utilised to the max and like Doom-3, id preferred dark and dimly lit levels to maximise visual appeal without really having a huge visual impact. Gameplay was very good, but once again, not as fun as Duke. However, even though the main SP part of the game itself may not be great, hundreds of addons and total conversions are available online which make the single player experience much much better. Deathmatch is the area where Quake could'nt be touched by any other game, by far.
