A vigilante homeless man pulls into a new city and finds himself trapped in urban chaos, a city where crime rules and where the city's crime boss reigns. Seeing an urban landscape filled with armed robbers, corrupt cops, abused prostitutes and even a pedophile Santa, the Hobo goes about bringing justice to the city the best way he knows how - with a 20-gauge shotgun. Mayhem ensues when he tries to make things better for the future generation. Street justice will indeed prevail.

Alright, we all need to be clear about something. Making a bad movie on purpose is not any better than doing it by accident. You can parody bad films. You can make an homage to a terrible genre like grindhouse flicks. You can even try to create a motion picture that captures the outrageous and subversive spirit of crappy cult classics. However, that parody, homage or recreation has to be good! It must be intelligently written! It must be well performed! It must have a structure and a theme and all that kind of stuff! Deliberating making a bad movie and then winking to the audience about how terrible it is doesn't cut it!

Based on a fake trailer from Grindhouse, this thing does kick Death Proof out of the spot as "Worst Film to Come Out of Grindhouse". Death Proof straight up sucked but at least there was some artistry that came out of a genius copying garbage filmmaking. Here, instead of Quentin Tarantino, we get the efforts of writer John Davies and director Jason Eisener. They fall slightly short of genius and by slightly short, I mean the distance between the Earth and Mars. They have bad senses of humor and no sense of perspective. The plot is terribly shaped, the dialog is plain goofy and the direction is limp. I will give the cinematographer, set designer and wardrobe folks some credit. There are some very striking colors on display here. It's too bad they're not put to any productive use.

Hobo With A Shotgun is about a hobo (Rutger Hauer) who wanders into a hellish urban landscape of crime, degradation and despair. He befriends a young hooker (Molly Dunsworth) and gets crosswise with an insane criminal (Brian Downey) and his even crazier sons (Gregory Smith and Nick Bateman). The hobo eventually grabs a shotgun and goes on a vigilante rampage, which forces his enemies to call in a couple of Mad Maxian super-villains (Nick Bateman and Peter Simas) to put a stop to our murdering, homeless hero.

Rutger Hauer plays a unique role in both redeeming and damning this movie. That's because he's the only one on screen who seems to be trying to do a good job. Hauer tries to salvage whatever comedy or drama he can out of this amateurish script. He says his lines with conviction and tries to play his part with some dignity, even at its most absurd, which is the only way to find any genuine humor or emotional relevancy in something like this. But like Val Kilmer in Tombstone, Hauer is basically in his own separate motion picture. Everybody else is doing one thing and Hauer is doing a completely different thing. But unlike Tombstone, which was an good Western melodrama and benefited from Kilmer's detached brilliance, Hauer's honest and forthright effort makes the rest of Hobo With A Shotgun look even worse.

Not that I'm blaming the rest of the cast. Much like Brandon Routh in Superman Returns, I'm sure their acting is exactly what their director asked of them. So their cheesy, campy, over-the-top and awkward performances are entirely Eisener's fault.

Let me give some specific examples of the suckiness I'm referencing. This is the kind of schlock-fest that gets its gore from treating human flesh and bone like papier-mâché. A kid gets his forearm broken by someone twisting it around a video game joystick. The leverage and fulcrum used for that is, of course, impossible. Another guy gets his foot hit with a sledgehammer and it splits apart like a web paper bag. Have you ever seen the x-ray of a foot? It's mostly bone in there and isn't going to turn to mush after one hit of a sledgehammer. Yeah, I know it may seem like I'm being silly, but I want to illustrate that Hobo With a Shotgun is like a live-action cartoon of people being murdered. What normal person wants to watch a live-action cartoon of people being murdered? That's a question the people who make live-action cartoons of people being murdered really need to ask themselves.

I suppose if you enjoy the heck out of violent flicks that are bad unintentionally, you might love to see one that's meant to be awful. If you want a movie that's actually, you know, good? Keep looking. Rutger Hauer is capable of so much more than this rubbish. Impossibly savage criminals and corrupt police are progressively killed by the Hobo of the title. There is no story, there is no moral, there is no redeeming feature to the film. It is simply the effects department emulating wanton and gory murder in the most graphic fashion. The film producer should aim higher. Hauer should aim higher. The audience should aim higher. There are so many interesting and important themes in the world, yet here we have something which any normally educated and balanced person must find repulsive. I once had a book which reviewed films. It had grades of watching importance: 1) Don't miss this! 2) If you have nothing better to do. 3) Find something better to do. This film definitely falls into the latter category
