During the last ice age, woolly mammoths lived in Siberia. They became extinct sometime around 25,000 years ago. At that time, climate had changed to become warmer. This caused the mammoth population to plummet mammoth ivory. Eventually, the temperatures reached a point where it was no longer feasible to keep the population alive. Therefore, the population was wiped out.

The first mammals to migrate into Europe were mammoths, which came in about two million years ago. These mammals are found all over the world, but their tusks are most commonly found in the Siberian tundra. Mammoth tusks are spirally curved, and they are usually stained by minerals. They are also usually broken and decayed. However, they are very rare in good condition.

Mammoth tusks were used in late Pleistocene societies. They were also used as tools. They are much larger than extant Asian and African elephants. They were a perfect raw material for spearheads and massive lanceheads. The tusks were held in the skull by a strong torsion. They were also used for huge wooden statues of deities.

In the late Upper Palaeolithic period, these societies used mammoth ivory whenever they could find it. They also used mastodon ivory. However, by the end of the ice age, woolly mammoths were scarce in Europe. This led to the demand for ivory. In fact, ivory was considered the best raw material for massive spearheads. In addition, it was used to make ivory plates. The demand for ivory continued after the ice age ended.

Mammoth tusks have a unique history. In the past, they were only collected from the surface, but in recent years, they have been harvested from melted ice in Siberia. The climate in Siberia, which was a stable environment, made this possible. However, the harvesting process involved considerable risk and effort.

In the Russian province of Yakutia, mammoth tusks are now of scientific value, and the government has enacted a sweeping law making the harvesting of mammoth tusks legal. In order to collect mammoth ivory, brigadas must travel to Russia to harvest tusks. The harvesters then sell the tusks to traders. The harvesters often get into debt to pay for fuel, and they lose everything they own.

The mammoth tusk is made of Dentin, which is a calcareous material with a high calcium content. In addition, it contains small amounts of other minerals. It is also highly dentinic, meaning that it is hard. The dentin is a layer of dense material that is added each season. Each year, a new layer of dentin is added to the tusk, creating a layered ring structure.

Mammoth ivory is used in a wide variety of applications, including jewelry, musical instrument inlays, pistol grips, chess sets, and carved wooden boxes. Because it is more porose than elephant tusk ivory, it is more durable. Also, it is much heavier than regular ivory.

Mammoth tusks can be very difficult to work with lithic tools. However, they are very useful for art works. They also have very unique and beautiful veining and polish.
