American reporter Steve Martin, on his way to Cairo for an assignment, has a stop over in Tokyo. During the layover, he decides to visit his old friend Dr. Daisuke Serizawa. However, the night before he landed, his plane passed over an area where a ship suddenly exploded and caught fire killing all hands. Martin is then questioned by the authorities and he tells them he saw nothing. After seven more ships suddenly disappear, Martin decides to stay in Japan to see what is going on. He and policeman Tomo Iwanaga then go to Odo Island, which is close to where many of the ships were destroyed. While there, they are caught in a typhoon and during the storm something comes ashore and kills several of the inhabitants and destroys several buildings. A few days later a scientific expedition led by paleontologist Dr. Kyohei Yamane arrives on the island and they are horrified to find a giant monster the natives call Godzilla. Now Japan and the world wait to see what horrors this monster will bring.
When American reporter Steve Martin investigates a series of mysterious disasters off the coast of Japan, he comes face to face with an ancient creature so powerful and so terrifying, it can reduce Tokyo to a smoldering graveyard. Nuclear weapon testing resurrected this relic from the Jurassic age, and now it's rampaging across Japan. At night, Godzilla wades through Tokyo leaving death and destruction in his wake, disappearing into Tokyo Bay when his rage subsides. Coventional weapons are useless against him; but renowned scientist Dr. Serizawa has discovered a weapon that could destroy all life in the bay -- including Godzilla. But which disaster is worse, Godzilla's fury, or the death of Tokyo Bay?
How can you deny a movie that started trends, added words to our everyday lexicon and keeps on going with a 50 year old movie star that doesn't look a day over 5?

I'm a firm believer in B/W films making monsters and scenery scarier than color can, and this movie justifies my beliefs. There's a certain touch of 'realism' that color can take out but B/W retains and this movie showcases that. For the time, this was a groundbreaking film and not only would it set the tone for every monster movie forthcoming but it would also put in pictures the horrors of what true devastation on a grand scale can look like, be it natural or man-made.

The American release company justifies the presence of Burr by saying they felt it needed an American to relate the story to the moviegoers here in the States so that it would have more appeal. I believe that logic to have fell flat, but it was a good effort. It's just that some scenes are so obviously 'added' it's downright laughable.

When seeing this one, try not to judge it based on any of the next 10 or so of his films you may have seen (from GvsMothra on). They can not compare and should not be grouped together. They would just be guilty pleasures. This one is the one that has substance and grit that a monster movie should have. 4.5/5 Godzilla: King of the Monsters starring Raymond Burr is a completely different work than the original Gojira. In the American version many references of the Nuclear Test have been muted and almost non-exsitent. While the Japanese version has many cautions about the plight of Nuclear war. Perhaps that decision was politically manipulated for the American Audience or it could be for the fact that the American producers wanted bottom-line cash and hook even if it meant making Godzilla: King of the Monsters no deeper than the flying saucer. All in all This movie is good for a laugh, but if your looking for a deep and haunting tale then opt for the original Gojira which has just recently been released of DVD by Classic Media.
