Survivors of a nuclear attack are grouped together for days in the basement of their apartment building, where fear and dwindling supplies wear away at their dynamic.
Nuclear explosions force the residents of a New York apartment block to run from the building. However, the explosions force them into a basement. Eight residents are holed up in the building's bomb shelter. They must acclimatise to each other in difficult, cramped conditions.
Ignore the critics, this is a must-see for any sci-fi fan! It's a dark post apocalyptic tale, driven by human emotions and terrific acting performances especially by Milo Ventimiglia and Michael Eklund as the film's crazy, villain duo. Eklund's haircut scene is one of the most emotional and haunting scenes i ever saw in cinema. The tragic tale of human nature, survival of the fittest and the selfish is perfectly encompassed in that single scene where a man realizes how far into the abyss of madness he's gone and that there is no coming back. Michael Biehn also delivers a strong performance as the antihero Mickey. The film itself is very haunting and leaves a deep impression on any intelligent film watcher. The music score is perfect, and elevates the film's melancholic atmosphere. I recommend this to everyone. Turn off the lights, immerse yourself in the film and enjoy "The Divide".
Xavier Gens' "The Divide" opens with a series of explosions ravaging New York City. Fleeing the flames, several men and women barricade themselves in the basemen of an apartment building. In this basement, a "Lord of the Flies" situation develops, Gens' survivors forming gangs, squabbling over leadership, food, status, and eventually committing murderous acts.

Whilst "The Divide's" descent into savagery is rushed and unconvincing, the film's moments of gore, nihilism and hate nevertheless offer glimpses of truth. Elsewhere Gens' attempts at being "political" are jaw-droppingly bizarre. He has, for example, bigoted survivalists "proven right" in their fears of bisexual men, whilst French cowards are revealed to be inept even in their sole moments of bravery. Throw in allusions to the September 11th terrorist attacks, and you have a rather odd film.

"The Divide" stars cult-favourite Michael Biehn, the fearless Rosanna Arquette, and ends with a powerful scene, young Eva (Lauren German) flushing herself down a toilet in an attempt to escape a humanity which has revealed itself to be but slime and filth. The film contains some cleverly designed low-budget Hazmat suits.

6/10 – Worth one viewing. It's doom that we're meant to feel here. And repulsion. I hate to say, but I shrugged.
There are two versions of The Divide. Next to the MPAA-rated "R" version (for disturbing strong violence and sexuality, and for pervasive language) there's also an unrated cut that's featured on the US DVD and Blu-ray. Countries like Germany or the UK only got the R-Rated.
