The American software designers Sean and Ben travel to Moscow to sell their software to investors. However, their Swedish partner Skyler pulls a fast one on Sean and Ben, and they are out of the business. They go to a nightclub, where they meet American Natalie and Australian Anne and they flirt with the girls and see Skyler in the club. Out of the blue, the population is surprised by lights, which they mistake for natural phenomena. But soon, they learn that the lights are aliens invading Earth and using power supply to annihilate mankind. Sean, Ben, Natalie, Anne and Skyler hide in the kitchen and when they leave the place, they seek out survivors on the street. Are they the last people on Earth?
In Moscow, five young people lead the charge against an alien race who have attacked Earth via our power supply.
Two young software entrepreneurs travel to Moscow to sell their latest in social media. When they get there, their contact has stolen their idea and is pitching it to some company's board. Later they go party and it turns out that the hottest girl in the club is with the guy who stole their idea. They also meet up with an American girl and an Australian girl.

Suddenly something is happening outside. Everyone leaves the club and they see yellow orange lights from the sky and spreading around the city. When the light comes in contact with a person, he will be instantly pulverized in a breathtaking effect. Chaos ensues and our group of 5 hides in the club's basement. Next day they go out and apparently, everyone else in the city has been wiped out. The group runs, hides in a mall. At night they see lights in an apartment and go there. Inside is a girl and a mad scientist. They find out that they can protect themselves if they are caged in some special cage that these electro-aliens can't overcome.

They also hear radio transmission about a submarine leaving the city the next day. The invasion is also world-wide. Then the group runs into some archaic survivalists who have developed a weapon that will zap the aliens. Our group is thinned out a bit, but the survivor's make it to the submarine and realize there that one girl is missing. They go after her and confront the aliens face to face. They are actually aliens inside of spinning wheels.

I have to say that The Darkest Hour had a very cool preview. I was looking forward to this movie a great deal. But it is somewhat of a letdown in terms of the casting, script, and direction. One can't care for any of the kids. It's only once the Russians appear that someone interesting is introduced, especially the Russian girl. This director clearly struggles with directing humans. In a story that involves survival and working together, our characters are oddly distant and unconnected, despite the lame and unnecessary love story. Things go downhill storywise when we see the true aliens. It would have been much better had they left things at the light creatures. The main character is really Moscow and it's great that this movie was actually filmed there instead of using green screen and buying stock film.

I'm still fond of this movie. A lot takes place during the day letting us enjoy of the city, the effects are truly outstanding, and the idea is great overall. A shame they let an inexperienced director have a stab at this instead of an experienced director. Why did this get such a low score on IMDb? I've just logged in now to try and help correct this.

This, really, is a watchable little sci-fi flick! I put it on (from my partner's blu-ray collection) one night just to fill in that last hour-and-a-bit before bed.

I really didn't expect much, even maybe a laugh. Instead I ended up putting out the other lights and turning the sound up.

It's no 2001, or Alien, or even Screamers, but...

It's really pacey, and just dives straight in - you are not left bored. The aliens are original and very well done. The plot details are neat and the reveals good. The tension is set up well and doesn't feel contrived. You get some GREAT footage around Moscow, a fascinating (if scary, even without aliens) city...

And best of all the Russians in the film are finally NOT shown to be idiots like they are in most English-speaking films (though I can't detail what they do without ticking the 'Spoiler' box).

I wonder - is that last point the part that earned this film its dire score? The dumb teenage uneducated yank audience couldn't take one of their pop-culture sacred cows being stepped on? An alien invasion flick that evidently expects dramatic shots of a depopulated Red Square to make up for a flatlining screenplay and the absence of even a single compelling character.
