This is a timeless movie that takes a look at teen life. It is a great story line. Keep in mind, each of us growing up come from different walks of life. This movie looks only at a few, and from a narrow point of view. I have read other comments here that the characters are stereo typical, and that teachers weren't like the one potrayed in the movie. Bad news for you, I grew up with kids similar to these and I had a teacher who was exactly like the one in the film. This movie hits home. I give it an 8 out of 10.

Simple, it's about bringing people together. It paved the way for millions of movies, while teaching the world that it is possible for everyone to just get along. We conducted character studies in a Psycology class at my high school. It revolved around this movie. We analyzed the characters. I took the class just because of that assignment. However, I learned more about myself in one semester, than I have in my entire life. I'm not sure if all that is relevant. The point Breakfast Club is a versatile movie that will stand the test of time. Every person on Earth can identify with at least one of the characters. After all, aren't we all a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, or a criminal.

There is no subtlety to it. It's as if a group of people went into a room and decided on what types to throw into the mix. The premise, of course, is a group of students who are making up detention on a Saturday. The teacher in charge is resentful, so other than an occasional peek into the library where they are wasting the day, he has little, if anything, to do with them. What follows is an interaction among just about every type of kid there is in a high school. And that's where it falls down because they have little depth. They have been designated, in my opinion, to play their role. We have the spacey girl, the athlete, the nerd, the popular girl, the rebel, the abused, and so on. While their conversations are interesting, it doesn't play to the much more complex kid. It's not a bad movie by any means, but some are seeing it as groundbreaking. It's not.

Beyond being in the same class at Shermer High School in Shermer, Illinois, Claire Standish, Andrew Clark, John Bender, Brian Johnson and Allison Reynolds have little in common, and with the exception of Claire and Andrew, do not associate with each other in school. In the simplest and in their own terms, Claire is a princess, Andrew an athlete, John a criminal, Brian a brain, and Allison a basket case. But one other thing they do have in common is a nine hour detention in the school library together on Saturday, March 24, 1984, under the direction of Mr. Vernon, supervising from his office across the hall. Each is required to write a minimum one thousand word essay during that time about who they think they are. As most people know, Shermer, Illinois is a fictitious suburb of Chicago in several John Hughes films such as this film, as well as Weird Science (1985), Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), Sixteen Candles (1984), Pretty in Pink (1986), and National Lampoon's Vacation (1983). But, the zip code that Brian states in the opening of the film, 60062, is to an actual town. It belongs to Northbrook, Illinois, a town about thirty miles north of Chicago. Northbrook was originally incorporated as "Shermerville" (it changed its name in 1923), and one of the main roads through the town is still named Shermer Road. Glenbrook North High School, on which the film is based, is located on Shermer Road. John Hughes graduated from Glenbrook High School, and based his movies on the school and students.
