If you are not able to update Messenger, you can uninstall and then reinstall the app. All the chats are stored on your Facebook account so that you will lose any conversations:

Go back to the Home display if you are in the app store.
Click and hold on any application icon until it gets started.

Reinstall the application from the App Store.
