Only what you don't need? That's what HP's Envy 13 is. It's a price-sensitive laptop that's thinner and smarter than a smartphone. Box one and box: check.

Ok, so we don't talk about the power level of the GeForce RTX here, but the Envy 13 MX150 should still give you a super portable gaming buzz. Of course it won't cost £750.

If you think that HP must make some sacrifices to reach this price, then you are right. But are they enough to ruin a tempting bargain purchase - that's what we're going to find here.

In Envy's design brief, the curve is not really on the agenda. It is all lines, geometric shapes and sharp angles. It may be made of aluminum like the MacBook, but it is discharged together, and the three will not mislead HP.

The whole thing weighs only about 1.3 kg and can be hidden behind the ordinary glossy magazine, so you can put it in a bag effortlessly and carry it all day long.

Those ultra-thin ratios mean that HP must gain creativity through connectivity, adding a folded USB3 port to each side of the machine. You can also get a USB-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and even a card reader - even though it's only a microSD card is big enough.

It's not a perfect laptop, with a picky touchpad, not just a satisfying keyboard and a screen that's just good, not a star. Battery life may also be better. For these reasons, I missed a five-star judgment - but it was a close call.

Since HP currently only needs £750 to purchase this model, the Envy 13 looks like a value, a defect, and so on. If you can learn to live with them, this is really a very good machine.
