‘Sweet Pecan Summer’ Hallmark Movie Review

Sweet Pecan Summer is the third movie on Hallmark Channel this year to feature at least one AAPI lead character/actor. This, in addition to seeing a new face on Hallmark in Christine Ko, makes me ve
ry excited for this second-to-last summer premiere.

Sweet Pecan Summer Plot
Amanda’s aunt Carol wants to sell the family pecan farm in order to start a new chapter in her life. Aunt Carol enlists in local realtor JP’s help to sell the farm. JP also happens to be Amanda’s high school sweetheart.

You can learn more about the movie from our sneak peek and on the Hallmark Channel website.

QC Approved
Lauren Tom as Aunt Carol is absolutely adorable. She perfects the meddling Asian aunt role. There is a youthfulness to her that doesn’t seem forced at all.

The romance, sparks, and chemistry picked up halfway through the movie when Amanda and JP meet up at the burger joint to discuss publishing the listing online. My favorite line was when Amanda only makes one small correction to JP’s listing, he expresses that he anticipated more of a battle, Amanda start talking, then JP says, “I wasn’t inviting a battle.” The delivery was perfectly adorable. This also gives us a glimpse into how their past relationship was and where it could possibly go.

It’s funny, when I first watched Wes Brown in Hart of Dixie and in his first few Hallmark movies, he seemed to be typecast as the young, pretty boy who didn’t really have an opinion about anything. However, in Sweet Pecan Summer, he gives JP character some more life. He’s opinionated, but he’s gentlemanly in how he expresses them. This makes the character seem more real as opposed to a placeholder for a Hallmark leading man.

I also enjoyed seeing Christine Ko for the first time on Hallmark Channel. I just question a few of the lines she was forced to deliver. Some of the dialogue, especially on Amanda’s end, was a bit unintentionally awkward during the first half of the movie. That said, the initially awkward dialogue was completely redeemed by the overly caffeinated scene when Amanda has an epiphany about her business.

Walter being the token white guy at the family dinner table actually cracked me up. It’s refreshing to see in a Hallmark movie.
