An offshore drilling accident releases a giant primordial shark. When the shark flies and walks on land threatening to turn a bikini contest into a bloodbath, marine biologist Kat Carmichael arrives to destroy the shark and save beach-goers. Her efforts are stymied by corporate bad guy Roger Wade and his flunky Stewart who are only interested in their own agenda of money, money, money. With time running out for beach loving humans, Carmichael recruits heroic skipper Chuck and fearless disc jockey Dynamite Stevens to help her blast the blood thirsty shark back to a watery grave.
Super Shark is set in California where oceanic disaster investigator Dr. Katherine Carmichael (Sarah Lieving) has hired a boat owned by Chuck (Tim Abell) to take her to the site where an oil rig sank, once there Katherine takes some samples & sets about piecing the puzzle together of how & why the rig sank. Meanwhile along the coast people have been disappearing & various reports of a huge Shark capable of moving on land are coming, at first the talk of a giant Shark is laughed at but Katherine discovers that the oil rig was drilling through ancient rock which she believes encased a giant prehistoric Shark & subsequently released it into the ocean where it has been eating lots of the local population & destroying expensive property. The US army are called in & with Katherine's help set out to kill the Shark...

Shown here in the UK on the SyFy Channel a fews weeks ago this abysmal creature feature was written, produced & directed by Fred Olen Ray & is just about as awful as films come, Super Shark really is a terrible film it's hard to believe anyone would make it, release it or want to watch it. The script stinks, it has all the usual creature feature SyFy Channel clichés like an ancient prehistoric monster woken up by an explosion or drilling or whatever which then goes around chomping on the awful cast with some sort of scientist trying to stop it. Super Shark is just too ridiculous for words, the climax features a fight between the Shark which can move on land using it's fins & a top-secret military tank which walks on four legs rather than moves on tracks. The sight of this CGI tank on legs kicking a CGI giant Shark in the face is just about the silliest thing I have ever seen & that's saying a lot. The character's are awful, there's a pointless love triangle between three Baywatch (1989-2001) style lifeguards that goes absolutely nowhere before they are all killed off, there's an incredibly annoying DJ called Dynamite Stevens who makes you want to kick the TV screen whenever he opens his mouth & the entire might of the US military here seems to come down to three soldiers & a General. There's some rubbish about the Shark either loving or hating radio waves which makes no sense, the obligatory romance between the hot girl & the guy is here & the exploits of the corrupt oil firm boss are completely dropped by the half way point. Super Shark only lasts for just over 80 minutes yet still I was bored & it felt like I had been watching it for days. One of the truly shoddiest & worst films I have seen, an absolute disaster from start to finish.

The CGI computer effects are terrible, just wait until you see the Shark jump onto the beach & move itself around. Pure comedy. The attack scenes are awful with one particularly dumb woman trying to fight the giant Shark off with a plastic umbrella, there's no build-up, there's no gore & only a little bit of fake looking CGI blood splatter. There's a scene where the Shark jumps out of the ocean & bites a fighter jet & a scene where it destroys a submarine in two more poorly rendered CGI abominations of the screen. There's lots of good looking people in skimpy beach wear but there's no nudity or anything memorable & the early scenes set on the beach look really cold with the wind blowing. Virtually the entire film takes place on a stretch of beach & in one bar, the Shark must like that particular stretch of beach considering it has the whole ocean to swim about in.

Probably filmed on a really low budget Super Shark has nothing going for it, terrible CGI effects, a laughable story that is all over the place, awful character's & rock bottom production values. The acting is bad although Sarah Lieving doesn't seem to realise she's in a load of crap (maybe nobody told her) & does actually try. A bit.

Super Shark is a terrible giant Shark creature feature of the kind we simply don't want or even need, I mean haven't the SyFy Channel & it's associates made enough of this sort of rubbish already? I think so. Check out the goofy DVD artwork too, it still won't prepare you for the tank on legs fighting the giant Shark scene though, nothing will. Pretty obvious the only reason to watch a movie titled "Supershark" on the SyFy channel is that you just need a good laugh. These knock-off movies of other stuff (in this case, Jaws) are the cable TV equivalent of the old Drive-in 2nd feature; made quickly and on the cheap, and it gives a few actors and tech people a chance to pay the rent.

Lead actress Sarah Lieving hopefully will get some better roles; she's definitely easy on the eyes, and not half-bad an actress, either (even with a ridiculous script like this). She plays a rogue scientist who got the boot for weird ideas, and now wants to find a big shark and yell at some big companies about being more green to the environment.

I love how the army sends about five guys to combat a monster killing people left and right: a captain and a few grunts. Their most powerful weapon is a tank designed to walk on feet. The director's idea of an army is not the only thing exposing the $99.99 budget; he also skimped on the FX, they're pretty much home PC grade CGI. The actors aren't given much guidance on what he wants them to do. It was humorous to see that the shark only ate dumb people that stood there on the beach waiting o get devoured. There's also a gabby DJ that talks to people on the radio as they're getting killed. Judging from how annoying he was, they may have been better off.

Utter nonsense, but good for a few laughs.
When a Treymar Industries oil rig collapses off the coast of California, Oceanic Investigation Bureau (OIB) agent and marine biologist Dr. Catherine "Kat" Carmichael (Sarah Lieving) comes to investigate. She charters the Blue Moon, captained by Skipper Chuck (Tim Abell), and decides, after taking a water sample, that the destruction was caused by Treymar pumping a toxic "hydrolizing agent" into the water, which weakened the foundation of the platform and eventually caused it to collapse. Meanwhile, the real cause of the rig's collapse—a giant, growling shark that can walk on its pectoral fins—moves to Los Angeles and begins chomping on divers, surfers, swimmers, and bikini-clad models. Super Shark was filmed from a screenplay written by Clyde McCoy, Antonio Olivas, and Fred Olen Ray. Kat speculates that the Super Shark is some prehistoric variety, possibly a Megalodon, that it was lying dormant in an underground chamber, and that Treymar's drilling process released it when the drill broke through the rock. When neither bullets, machine guns, flame throwers, nor underwater charges are able to penetrate the shark's tough skin, Army National Guard Captain Jackson (Randy Mulkey) calls in his secret weapon, a prototype of a "walking tank". Kat and Chuck bring along a weapon, too—a large speaker and a boombox—by which they can broadcast radio waves and listen for the shark's disruptive plasmodic signal as a means of telling them that the shark is near. Kat also asks Captain Jackson to install a C-4 with a remote detonator on the boombox. With the help of the speaker, the shark is lured to the beach, but it quickly decimates the walking tank. In a last ditch effort, Kat attempts to lure the shark toward her boombox. When the shark responds, she runs into a cave and, when the shark tries to follow her into it, she tosses the boombox down its throat and detonates it. In the final scene, Treymar's director of operations, Roger Wade (John Schneider), assures the public in a television interview that Treymar will rebuild the oil rig and continue to search for new and deeper sources of energy. Wade says, "It's like Sarah always said, Drill, baby, drill." He is referring to a 2008 vice-presidential debate in which Republic candidate Sarah Palin, then Governor of Alaska, used the phrase "Drill, baby, drill" in her debate against Democratic candidate Joe Biden.
