Yes, learning to read, write, and do math are vital skills. But is that really enough? Especially so in a post-pandemic world such as ours where life’s complexities are ever-increasing.

We as a civilization are gradually moving away from our obsession with “hard” skills or technical skills. We finally realise how equally (or more) important it is to be an efficient communicator, a leader, a team player, an active listener, and an innovative problem solver.

There is a myriad of skills labeled “soft skills”. So, which of those does your child need under his/her belt in 2021? Read on ahead.

Emotional Intelligence

One thing the pandemic has taught us is that there are trying times ahead of us (unfortunately). What we also know is that emotions drive people. So how does your child develop the right skill set to deal with any scenario that is thrown his/her way? By learning self-confidence, empathy, self-control, perseverance, and optimism (in other words, emotional intelligence).

Communication

We might not be seeing much of people’s faces these days but communication remains indispensable.

2021 is witnessing a shift from brick-built classrooms to laptop screens. Your child is indeed learning something new every day. But is (s)he able to effectively put the message across? Is (s)he collaborating with his/her classmates?

Be it reciting a poem over Zoom class or talking to friends over call, communicating your message clearly and effectively is essential to any discourse.

Problem Solving

Is your child capable of “figuring things out” on their own?

All parents want their children to navigate the world independently. But we often tend to believe that children aren’t capable of handling situations. How wrong! Problems aren’t age-restrictive and hence, learning to solve them shouldn’t be either.

Innovation & Creativity

No time like the 21st century to ask “What if?”

2021 has been a year of flux. Amidst all these changes, what is in demand is curiosity and the ability to think out-of-the-box. Any education that does not foster innovation and creativity is pointless.
