Tough guy Thomas Beckett is a US Marine working in the Panamanian jungle. His job is to seek out rebels and remove them using his sniper skills. Beckett is notorious for losing his partners on such missions. This time he's accompanied by crack marksman Richard Miller, who's more of an office-type. Together they plan to seek out an important rebel leader, whilst avoiding a rogue marksman who frequents this part of the jungle.
A US Marine sniper is partnered with a SWAT member to take out rebel leaders in the jungles of Panama.
Sniper is the kind of film you find on the USA Network. The writer was probably well-intentioned, but they couldn't scrape up more than twenty dollars to hire decent talent or equipment.

We follow Billy Zane, who I think of as the flamboyant version of Vin Diesel, into the jungles to help Tom Berenger hunt a drug lord and some rebel factions. Zane is the higher rank, but he's just a guy in a suit. Berenger has been eating and breathing sniping and jungle love for some time now and doesn't need Zane to watch him.

The film works if you like watching two guys in the jungle shooting at things. Because mostly that's all you're going to see. But don't be fooled: this isn't Rambo, the action isn't as intense. Nor is the story as interesting or the acting as fun to watch (which is weird, since you'd think Stallone would be easy to top).

If I had to say something nice about this film, I'd say the scenery was very good. Best jungle I've seen since "Predator". Not that I was really hoping to see many movies with really nice jungles.

I can't see why anyone would buy this or even rent it, but maybe you're into the whole military in the jungle genre. You're a rare breed if you are, but this might be your cup of Colombian coffee. Best acting rendered by Tom Berenger.Billy Zane,otherwise commendable for dramatic adventure performances in Memphis Belle (1993) and The Phantom (1996),fails to make believable his character's see-sawing,erratic personality (how has he been chosen as a National Security Council operative for a top-ranking killing mission in the Panamanian outback, with only an office background?).The build-up is interesting enough,though the junior marksman played by Zane is deeply fear-stricken to begin with and later on at best irresponsibly indecisive while unbelievably careless,grouchy and childishly arrogant in his goings-on in the jungle,with the murderous streak suddenly developed against his senior partner toward the end of the story seeming very far-fetched,in view of the fact that the baddies are a mere stone's throw away and closing in,so you would not think anyone in that situation would care to consider erasing the only person on his side,not at least until after they had succeeded in escaping and certainly not in the middle of the bullet-ridden mêlée.Berenger looks and acts the part he plays,as a professional military man with all the trappings of a skilled specialist,bare of conceit,plus a moral streak(in jumping to the occasion of wiping out two evildoers rather than just one).The film's unsurprising ending -the junior marksman growing up to become a man- can be discounted by the audience: nothing to remain in the viewer's memory -certainly nothing as Sgt. Croft's unexpected demise towards the end of Raoul Walsh's 1958 film "The Naked and the Dead"-.

Both versions exhibit a different cutting sequence. Concerning the cutting of various scenes, the R-Rated version is faster and more suspenseful than the UK version. With the exception of the censorship of one scene of violence, only scenes are missing that were slowing the film down and did not add anything important to the story.
