Ceilings and walls

• Does the plasterwork look uniform or even? Are the edges neatly arranged around sockets and pipework?
• Do you see any obvious flaws like bumps or screw pops that aren't finished?
• Do all walls look authentic? Are they square and straight?
• Are there cracks on the surface that are greater than the thickness of 10-pence?

Windows

• Check frames for damage, scratches, etc.
• Do the windows swing open and close in the way one would imagine?
• Do you have trickle vents? Are they shut and open in a proper manner?
• Is the glass free of scratches, cracks, or scratches?
• On windows with locks, do they function properly? Are the keys properly in place?
• Are the windows in your bedroom all compliant with the building's regulations on evacuation in the case of fire?
• Do all low-level windows come with security glass that has the BS Kitemark fitted?
• Are the windows properly sealed? Examine the gaps between the frames and the wall

Floors

• Are they on the same level?
• Does the screed have no cracks?
• Are the edges closed to stop drafts?
• When floorboards are in place are they creaking? Have they been secured properly?

Doors and doorframes

• Do all doors open easily and close properly?
• Are all doors secured when shut and free of rattle?
• Is the space between the frame and the door evenly distributed all the way around?
• Do the locks and latches function properly? Do you have all the keys?
• Do hinges operate without creaking?
• Are handles easy to operate?
• Are all handles and hinges free of paint?
• Do door stops have the right dimensions? Is this required?
• Do the exterior doors have the ability to block drafts?

Stairs

• Are the stairs properly secured?
• Are all spindles and handrails solid and secure?
• Are all spindles and handrails free of harm?
• Are the treads even?
• Do the treads groan or creak as you walk on them?
• Are the spindles equally spaced? Is there less than 100mm distance between each spindle?
• Is the handrail set at the right size? (900mm)
• Do you have enough headroom?

Paintwork

• Have you seen any decorations everywhere?
• Are all painted areas free of blemishes?
• Do you see any unattractive paint drips?
• Was every area painted adequately prepared prior to the paint being painted?
• Do you have the undersides of all window sills painted?
• Are all architraves correctly painted?
• Are all skirting boards correctly painted?
• Is the paintwork free of scratches?

Pipework

• Are all pipes secure and free of leaks?
• Are exposed pipes painted?
• Are walls in good condition at the point where pipes can enter and exit?
• Have the units been cut in a neat manner so that pipework can be accessed?
• Are the vent and soil pipes connected properly?
• Have all the pipes involved been dated?

Fittings and fixtures

• Have all fittings and fixtures been correctly installed?
• Are all the fittings and fixtures functioning the way they ought to? (Does the taps function for instance?)
• Are all fittings and fixtures clean and unaffected?
• Do all cupboard and cabinet doors shut and open properly?
• Have all cabinet and cupboard doors been properly hung?

Lighting

• Do all lights function?
• Are the lights adequate?
• Are spotlights for wet areas compliant?
• Are the light switches in wet areas in compliance?
• Are there lights under the cabinet within the kitchen? Does it function?
• Are all light switches installed correctly and switched in a uniform manner?

Heating

• Does the heater work?
• Do all radiators, except one, do they have the thermostatic valves for radiators (TRVs) that are fitted?
• Are all radiators secured on the wall?
• All radiators are in good working order and the pipework leak-free?
• Are all radiators, as well as pipework, safe from chipping, damage, or paint spatters?
• Do you think the appliance has enough clearance when it is placed in a cabinet?
• Has the wall around the boiler been reconstructed after the flu and pipework were put in?
• Do you have user manuals for all the heating equipment in your home?
• Do you possess a gas safety certification?

Plumbing

• Are all the taps working?
• Do you think the toilet flushes?
• Does your washing machine appear to be properly set up and plumbed?
• Does the dishwasher have the correct fittings and is it properly plumbed?
• Is the stop cock accessible and clearly labeled?
• Are there dead legs?
• Are the water tanks and pipes well-insulated?

Electrics

• Are all electrical sockets working?
• Are all the TV sockets working?
• Do all the lines on the phone work?
• Are all sockets for electrical power the same in appearance?
• Are all electrical outlets at the right height and at an appropriate level?
• Are all electrical outlets installed at an appropriate level?
• Has the fuse box been installed correctly and properly labeled?
• Do you have smoke alarms in place? Are they all functioning?
• Are carbon monoxide alarms in place? Are they all working?
• Are the thermostats for heating installed in a way that is easy to reach? Is it set in the right place? (i.e., not in the vicinity of a radiator in the kitchen or next to any other source of heat)
• Are there fan isolation systems and are they installed at a high level in the toilets and bathrooms?
• Are you in possession of an electrical safety test certification?

Appliances

• Are the appliances you are providing working properly?
• Do the appliances you purchase come with the required accessories as well as user guides, warranties, and warranties?
• Are all appliances supplied appropriately labeled switches? Do they have the appropriate amp fuses?
• Are all the appliances that are provided free of marks, damage, or chips? What about paint splashes?

This checklist is meant to be a reference and is not completely complete. The flaws listed are just a few of the major problems that are encountered in new construction, however, this doesn't mean they will not be found in the new home you've built.
