In 1939, an intrepid reporter in New York City makes a connection between the story she's covering -- of famous scientists suddenly disappearing around the world, and a recent attack on the city by giant robots. Determined to find the solution to these happenings, she seeks the help of her ex-boyfriend, the captain of a mercenary legion of pilots. The two are investigating the case when the robots attack the city again, though in a stroke of luck, Sky Captain's right-hand man is able to locate their source. They then set off on an adventure in search of the evil mastermind behind these schemes, who is bent on creating a utopia and destroying the current world.
After New York City receives a series of attacks from giant flying robots, a reporter teams up with a pilot in search of their origin, as well as the reason for the disappearances of famous scientists around the world.
"Sky Captain And The World of Tomowrrow" was the first movie that had everything but the main characters made with CGI. This was the movies biggest asset and the biggest flaw: CGI looks good, but mostly it looks too fake when compared on the actors. In all the style of CGI reminds more feature CGI animation than photo-real.

There is some great imagery in the film, there's no denying that. CGI has given the makers of the film to make scenes and surroundings not existing in the real world. So for that I must lift my hat.

As for the plot itself, SKATWOT draws a lot from the same sources as "Star Wars" or "Indiana Jones" movies: pulp culture of old TV serials and adventure movies. There's giant robots, mad scientist and even couple of dinosaurs. This all just doesn't blend in very smoothly. Some scenes are so rushed, that the viewer is left to wonder "gee, where did they come from? So how did they actually escaped? So what was the point of that?" Acting is okay most of the time, it's just that the script doesn't present the characters extremely dimensionally: they all got one character trait which they manifest during the film. That would be okay, expect you actually don't care of what will happen to characters.

Most interesting character would be Franky Cook (Angelina Jolie, who is billed as a third main actor even thought she in only about 15 minutes or so). Jude Law does decent, but persona-less role as The Sky Captain, Joe and Gwyneth Paltrow just drags along as a nosy reporter.

So, a summary: A movie with some nice visual scenes and okay CGI, would have benefited more of a real script. Now it's just a demonstration of what CGI can do. Watchable but some times little too serious for its own good. There are those who have expressed disappointment with "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow", apparently upset at its lack of depth. Which forces one to wonder: exactly what did people expect from a film called "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow"? Perhaps they expected profound commentary on man's place in the universe. Perhaps they were looking for analysis of sex-roles between the wars. Perhaps they were in the wrong cinema. The promotional material and seemingly endless marketing campaign for the film have made it clear enough, even if the title still left some viewers in the dark. This is an adventure movie featuring Gwyneth, Jude and Angelina. It is set in a hyper-stylised, computer-generated retro-future world, packed with cool gadgets and awesome machines. There are robots. There are jet-packs. There are planes that turn into submarines. There are dinosaurs, mad scientists, baddies, goodies, the works. And you're still disappointed? Giant robots stomping about not impressive enough for you? Jude Law piloting a fighter-plane through New York practically at street level not thrilling enough? Angeline Jolie as a British naval officer in charge of a flying landing strip just too mundane? Some people are never satisfied. For the rest of us, who relish a good fantasy romp, "Sky Captain" is fine entertainment. Of course, it's also a dazzlingly-realized experiment in graphic design. Luckily, the surface sheen never swamps the action or the characters. The plot is always the driving force. As in the excellent Pixar animation features, the fact that everything looks so great is never allowed to get in the way of a good story. And it is a good story, if not a great one. Scientists are being bumped off, massive robots are taking downtown apart, Gwyneth, the plucky reporter, has some clues and might be able to sort it all out with a little help from her ex, the Sky Captain. Needless to say it's all alright in the end, but everything is done in such a snappy, lets-get-on-with-it manner you don't care that you've seen it all before. Perhaps the film's biggest achievement is to take the eminently resistible Giovanni Ribisi and, via the wonders of modern technology, render him almost bearable. So, sit back and enjoy, and thank the lord for a blockbuster with more brains, wit and style in any one of its scenes than can be found in the whole of the dismal "I, Robot".
Conran's Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a pastiche of everything from "King Kong" to "The Wizard of Oz," a movie that escalates to a breathless cliff-hanger every 20 minutes or so and reinvents itself with every reel.
The two vials contained the material for Totenkopf's genetically engineered humans, his Adam and Eve. "Sky Captain" is Joe's call-sign, or pilot nickname. The story behind it remains unknown.
