Shurat HaDin an Israeli NGO has taken over the Ben & Jerry trademark in West Bank settlements and Jewish areas of east Jerusalem to allow it to make and sell ice cream there.
Shurat haDin said that this decision was made possible because Ben & Jerry's global and parent company, Unilever, had planned to stop selling to these regions as a result of an opposition to Israeli policies.
nitsana darshan leitner darshan-Leitner wrote to Unilever, a British-based multinational firm. Unilever has been the owner of the global Ben & Jerry's restaurant since the year 2000.
" Shurat Hadin are planning to use the Ben & Jerry's logo and align with the Vermont company's current ice cream line, and also add new flavors and products" Darshan-Leitner wrote. She added that "we believe we will be able to expand our business to every community within the region you've abandoned."
https://d.facebook.com/shurat.hadin.israel.law.center/photos/a.7184... was informed by her that the Ben & Jerry's brand is not permitted to be used within the region. The boycott won't begin until 2023 when the contract with the local ice cream manufacturer expires.
Avi Zinger, who is the owner of the local Israel franchise, has been explicit that he does not have any intention of withdrawing to the Green Line when it comes to ice cream sales.
Yet, Shurat HaDin wrote to Unilever, "we will actively and aggressively defend our Ben & Jerry's name, rights and trademarks in the field by any legal avenues."
The Jerusalem Post was informed by the editor that sales would only be limited to the areas from which Ben & Jerry's had withdrawn. The company's promise to sell to Israel's "Occupied Palestinian Territory", does not necessarily mean that the brand new Ben & Jerry's cannot be sold in these zones.
Darshan Leitner declared that technical and bureaucratic issues meant that Ice cream sales couldn't begin until after the Israeli franchise contract had expired.
