The strategies leaders use to drive explicit coordination typically fall into the categories of: building effective work processes, planning, and direct communication. 1. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions
Whether you’re a team leader or a team member, asking questions is essential for effective coordination. Not only does it allow you to clarify your own thoughts, but it can also help your teammates understand what your intentions are and how they may affect the overall team. This ensures that everyone is on the same page and makes it easier to coordinate tasks.

In general, questions can be divided into two categories: practical and strategic. A strategic question aims to provoke client explorations outside their current frames of reference, while a practical question focuses on concrete solutions and actions. The key is to carefully consider how a question is formulated, how it’s served in the coaching process, how much attention and energy the coach devotes to it, etc.

For example, it is common for coaches to ask questions that are recursive, paradoxical or strategically designed to create confusion. These questions typically rest on a systemic framework and are intended to disrupt the linear and logical client processing. These questions often serve to obtain recognition, justify the coach’s presence, push to accelerate client problem solving or otherwise impose the coaching agenda.

Another type of strategic question is the hypothetical question, which is intended to stimulate client imagination and explore alternative possibilities. It can be a powerful tool for facilitating clients to shift their perspectives, but it’s important to provide adequate time and space for the client to elaborate on the new proposed context.

Additionally, it is also advisable to avoid question formulations that are reminiscent of negative interrogation. For example, questions that begin with “why don’t you” or “what keeps you from” are generally viewed as problematic. These questions are replete with negativity and can focus the client on their blocks, hinderances and limitations, rather than their potential to design and implement their own solutions. Moreover, they can also trigger defensive reactions and prevent the client from exploring new alternatives that are based on their strengths.
