Short-term, effective treatment available for dry eye disease

Dry eye disease is a condition in which the eyes do not produce enough tears or their tears evaporate too quickly. This can lead to symptoms like burning, itching, or redness of the eyes. Currently, there are several treatment options available for people with dry eye disease including over-the-counter artificial tear products and prescription medications along with ophthalmic procedures that help improve overall function of the eyelids.
Dry eye disease can be difficult to manage without treatment, however there are dry eye treatments available. There are three main dry eye treatments: over-the-counter artificial tear products, prescription medications and ophthalmic procedures.

Short-term dry eye treatments available include the use of over-the-counter artificial tears which can ease dryness temporarily. Prescription dry eye treatments may be used in conjunction with artificial tears. One example of this is the use of topical cyclosporine which helps the eye retain moisture.

Another dry eye treatment is Restasis. This dry eye treatment works by increasing tear production. Restasis dry eye treatment is only effective when used daily for the duration of dry eye disease symptoms.

You can also try punctal plugs, which are tiny tubes that block the drainage ducts at the end of your eyelids to prevent dry eye tears from draining into your nose or cheeks. These dry eye treatments can be a long-term dry eye treatment, but they do have some drawbacks. They may cause dryness in the skin around your eyes and occasionally punctual plugs can leak or fall out.
