It is becoming more and more obvious as the years pass by that humans are having a giant impact on the planet. Specifically, the environment. Almost all our activities have some kind of effect, right down to what we use to package food.
Perhaps the biggest contributor to the escalating environmental crisis that is heading toward future generations is the automotive industry. Steps are being made to correct this, such as the introduction of electric cars. However, not everyone has access to electric cars. But there are still ways that the average person can make a small difference. And one of them is how we decide to dispose of vehicles that have reached the end of their driving careers, so to speak.
The Importance of Recycling for the Environment
If you have owned a car for a while, the longer you own it the more likely it is that you will be the one who owns it when it dies. This could happen for any reason. It could have been written off in a crash, been in a flood, or had a major part break, such as the engine.
Whatever the reason, you will know it has happened when it is more expensive to fix than it would cost to just buy a replacement car. And when this occurs, you need to know how to get rid of it. Otherwise it will continue to impact the environment by leaking toxic substances into the environment. But not just that reason. If properly recycled, those recycled materials can be used to make new things.
The majority of your average automobile is made of steel. Steel is originally mined from the ground. This process uses a lot of energy resources, and thus creates a lot of pollution. Recycling steel uses far less energy and creates far less pollution, and reduces the need to mine it from the earth.
Climate Change
One gas that gets released by the use of energy resources is carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas. It is driving climate-change. It does this by trapping warmth in the atmosphere. The general global temperature is increasing at a rate that it wouldn’t be increasing at by natural means. It is clear to a majority of scientists (97%) that we are causing this.
Until technologies such as electric cars are available to everyone, we can still do other things to make sure that we are doing our bit to minimise our individual impact on this process. One of them is to carpool more often. Using public transport is another great option. Or you could use a bike when making small trips instead of a car.
And another way to help is to have your junk car recycled. Don’t just leave it to rust away somewhere. Don’t leave it on a land fill. Find out who your local auto wrecking companies are, and choose the one who has the best recycling credentials.
