Picking up where the original series left off, Scott Bernard continues his search for Rick Hunter and the fate of the SDF-3.
The Robotech Expeditionary Force stages their final assault on the Invid to liberate Earth at all costs along with REF pilot Scott Bernard and the Invid princess Ariel's parallel planetside efforts at the alien's stronghold, Reflex Point. Just before the attack, the fleet gets a distress call from Admiral Rick Hunter and their flagship, SDF-3. In the ensuing mission, which only manages to rescue the android Janice Em, the REF discover that they have been betrayed by their own ally, the Haydenites, whose powerful technology they have supplied now is revealed to be designed to devastatingly enable their own plans of conquest even as the Invid withdraw. As Scott and Ariel join the fleet, the disparate pair and Janice must overcome their comrade's deep distrust to find a means to stop their newest foe before it is too late.
Caught this at the Brattle theater the other night, and was sorely disappointed. The movie takes place at the end of the New Generation, with the raid on Reflex point. The story seems interesting, but unless you have read the novels, you will be lost on a lot of the major plot points. None of the characters look like their former selves, and the dialog is terrible. It was nice to see the Alpha fighters back in action, but the CG was absolutely dismal. If it had been cell-shaded CG, that would have been a lot better.

Another odd thing i noticed is how well endowed every woman was in this movie. I guess they grow 'em big out in space. It just seemed a little gratuitous.

It was nice to see Robotech on the big screen, but I can see why this took so long to come out. Shadow Chronicles is a relaunch of the US Robotech Animated TV Series.

The movie/OVA deals with events that accrued on last episode of its "third" series. A key character from old series, Scott Bernard, leaving his beloved "Marlene/Ariel" begin the search of giant warship named SDF-3. By joining the surviving ships of the Robotech Expedition Force to discover what happened to the Invid and SDF-3.

From what has been printed about this OVA, it is a modified story based on the Robotech novel "End of the Circle" which was suppose to be the completion of the original series in printed form.

This is the strongest attempt to produce a actual sequel to the series. Previous attempt, Robotech II: The Sentinels (1986) which failed to be completely produced due to production cost changes between Japan & USA.

Sentinels was published in Novel form as well in form of a successful comic book series till it was canceled in mid-90s by Harmony Gold.

Thou it is high quality, i do not think its as good as the original series. I know its tough act to follow. However, the CGI does not blend well with hand drawn animation.
In 2002, the production company did announce a new Robotech television series set for 2004. By the time 2004 rolled around, plans had changed for the project to become a feature-length movie that would act as a "pilot" for either a future television series or a continuous series of movies. While the original movie was slated to be released in late 2005, the production was pushed back until late 2005/early 2006 for numerous reasons. One reason claimed by Harmony Gold, the production company, was that the movie was expanded from 75 mintues to 88 mintues. Another reason for the delay was so that several voices could be re-dubbed in late 2005, after the initial voicework had been done in the Fall of 2004.

Just as the movie was completed, distribution negotiations with a company had fallen through. Harmony Gold's official stance was that there were clauses they found unfavorable in the contract.

It wasn't until July of 2006 when Harmony Gold signed a deal with anime distirbutor Funimation. Originally announcing a DVD street date of November 21, 2006 with a limited theatrical run preceding it, the DVD date was moved to February 6, 2007. The main explanation given by Harmony Gold is that a February date would allow for retailers to have more shelve space for the DVD. As announced by Harmony Gold, plans are underway for a limited theatrical release. Because no film prints are being made of the movie, it can only be released in theaters with digital projection. No exact dates have been announced yet. The first part of the movie overlaps with the final episodes of the original television series, and continues the story beyond that point. Many of the characters from the original series are integrated into the storyline. There are certain story elements and characters taken from the The Sentinels, however it acts as its own story.

The prequel comic series, 'Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles,' is actually a direct sequel to the '90s Waltrip Comic series, starting with the plot points that the series ended with. Quick song free download
