Earth has been conquered by robots from a distant galaxy. Survivors are confined to their houses and must wear electronic implants, risking incineration by robot sentries if they venture outside.
Alien robots come to Earth and assert their control over humanity. They claim that they only want to observe humanity. They enforce a strict no one allowed outside rule. They implant humans with a device that alerts sentries to anyone who goes outside and if they refuse to comply they are destroyed. They also employ humans to be their proctors. One of these men is Robin Smythe. He tries to get Kate Flynn to be his wife but she still mourns her husband whom Smythe says died. But her son Sean, doesn't believe it. He sends messages out asking anyone who knows anything about his father to tell him. One day he and three young people are fooling around when they discover that they turned off their implant. That's when they go outside and someone answers Sean's message and tells him where his father is. So he goes out to find him But Smythe pursues him and brings his mother as leverage. And when the robots corner Sean he somehow manages to control them. So the Robots are curious why he can do that. So they tell Smythe to capture him.

In robot-occupied Britain, mainly One street, city centres are devastated and a gang of teenagers live in a seaside town constantly under robot threat, and Ben Kingsleys panto style villain.

Fairly intimidating sentries patrol the streets, and are merciless death machines, but they are nice enough to give you a five minute warning.

The Mediator is deceptively childlike but autonomous, promising everyone it will all be over soon.....

I was quite looking forward to this. I like the directors other movies, as they are tongue in cheek nods to their respective genres, so I was hoping that this would be also semi parody,me specially with the inclusion of Kingsley, who is always good for his ham.

But no, it's pretty serious all the way through, despite unintentional laughs, and the film cannot decide what it wants to be, despise 'homaging' almost every known TV series and film that is popular at the moment.

It's like a massive melting pot consisting of elements from The Walking Dead, Dr. Who, Transformers, Coronation Street, War of the Worlds, and those children film foundation movies we saw at school in the eighties.

But with all the fun and character detail taken away.

So we are left with a group of children looking for Steven Mackintosh, while dealing with a sub plot of Kinglsey trying to get it on with Gillian Anderson, which just doesn't seem right in a supposed family film.

And if things couldn't get any more incoherent, we then have Geraldine James and Tamer Hassan running some Burlesque type fight club for football supporters. And let's not mention the CGI boy..........strange.

So it had good intentions, but it's a bit of a mess. Maybe if they made it into a mini series and showed it on Saturday tea time just after the football results, maybe the characters could have been fleshed out, and it would have made more sense.

Oh wait a minute,they did that in the eighties with Tripods. This is a low budget movie. Deal with it. The action and the special effects are there just to further the story, which is nothing special, the typical "young rebels save the day from oppressive gits", with some family love thrown around for seasoning. But the film itself is not bad.

The reason for the invasion of Earth and for our quick defeat is one of the most believable in years. No they don't want our water or our gold, duh! The robot mediator is also done very interestingly, apparently trying to maximize the uncanny valley effect and succeeding quite well.

Bottom line: I feel this is the British version of a summer blockbuster: medium to low budget, a simple story that appeals to teens, but filled with interesting ideas in the way they use the special effects and the direction of the movie. While not a masterpiece, it is clearly a breath of fresh air in the stale atmosphere of big budget summer films. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of its cast, the film just isn’t that good.
