HTC described its Exodus 1 as "the first smartphone built for this new Internet." It was the brainchild of Phil Chen, the veritable "decentralized chief officer" of the Taiwanese company.

Chen said that the way to gain power is to introduce a paradigm shift in the big data business model of these large technology companies, from the applications we use to the way we pay.

These blockchain phones use the same basic technology as Bitcoin, so it's no surprise that crypto currencies play a key role in their operations.

At MWC, HTC also introduced a new set of distributed applications - or dApps - that do not share or send data back to a centralized company or server. Some applications even allow people to monetize their data by selling cryptocurrencies.

Payments can also be made in other ways, which means that users can make small payments directly to websites and content creators without the need for transaction fees.

Even the phone's default browser, Opera, supports this feature, describing itself as the world's first browser to support encryption.

"We are in the midst of a new generation of networks, and new decentralized services will challenge the status quo," said Charles Hamel, password director at Opera. “HTC and Opera both made bold decisions and became the first to strengthen and achieve this transformation.”

HTC Exodus 1 comes with a built-in crypto currency wallet that stores the private keys of Bitcoin, Ethereum and Rheincoin. Since it is not connected to the Internet, this refrigerated wallet protects funds from hackers and protects personal data.

So far, HTC Exodus can only buy cryptocurrencies, but since March, people can buy it in traditional legal currency, and ultimately hope that mobile phones and decentralized networks can become mainstream.

“I don't like to call it a blockchain phone because it's not just for encrypting geeks,” Chen said. "This is about the Internet."

HTC Exodus 1 and Sirin Finney may be the first, but blockchain technology has penetrated into more mainstream devices.

Smartphone innovation may have stagnated in recent years, but HTC plans to reshape ubiquitous devices while reshaping the entire Internet.

The Taiwanese company presented its vision for the future of smartphones at the 2018 Consensus Cryptography Conference in New York, explaining how blockchain technology can be used to support cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.

“Our vision is to extend the blockchain ecosystem by creating the world's first mobile phone dedicated to decentralized applications and security,” HTC said on its website dedicated to new devices.

The phone will use a native crypto currency wallet that allows users to send and receive crypto currency payments to other devices, and each device can act as a node, allowing users to exchange crypto currency transactions.
