Set in 1820s America, fur trapper and Frontiersman Hugh Glass struggles to survive the harsh winter after an oppressive Ree Indian attack and a mauling from a hostile maternal bear. Abandoned by his crew, Glass attempts to cross the bleak wasteland with only a single notion set in his mind; Revenge.
While exploring uncharted wilderness in 1823, legendary frontiersman Hugh Glass sustains injuries from a brutal bear attack. When his hunting team leaves him for dead, Glass must utilize his survival skills to find a way back home while avoiding natives on their own hunt. Grief-stricken and fueled by vengeance, Glass treks through the wintry terrain to track down John Fitzgerald, the former confidant who betrayed and abandoned him.
The Movie starts watching a crew who get attacked by two different groups of men. Both looking for the goods they was transporting. The survivors of the attack run away into the woods. One man Hugh Glass, the strongest guy, get attacked by a grizzly bear. The grizzly bear was incredible, the whole fight was dramatic and I couldn't buy it, that Glass would survive. Specially when the grizzly bear fall over Hugh Glass. After one hour flashback watching, drama surviving watching, waiting that something happens, and one victim later, Glass faced a French speaking camp, where a young Native American get raped. He decide to take a horse and save the girl. At mostly same time Fitzgerald another man of the first attacked group, get back to town/camp and report to an officer, that the whole crew members where death, just him and a young boy, survived. The boy felt guilty about Fitzgerald report, because he left Glass before alive back in the woods, and did not know if the whole crew be death. The best part of the movie was the last 32 minutes, after Glass get hunt by native Americans and fall down the canyon, and survived. Because the captain made to the town/cam and report to the office what happen to him and to the other members, and under his coat he had Glass water bottle with him. Immediately man get on their horses and start looking for Glass. Well the rest is yours, have fun to watch the movie.
Its a shame that in a movie with such exceptional directing, acting, cinematography, music, and production design that the story couldn't have been amazing as well. That's not to say that the story here is necessarily bad it just feels a little thin especially for a 2 1/2 hour film.

There are definitely elements of a compelling story here, especially when it comes to the internal and external conflicts of the two main characters, Hugh Glass and John Fitzgerald (played marvelously by Leonardo DiCaprio in a career best performance and Tom Hardy) Hardy in particular is the most fleshed out and interesting character and has several monologues that let you get to know him as a person and its pretty riveting.

The movie clearly is not trying to be story driven, instead its more focused on imagery and themes and does both very well. In fact basically everything about this movie is spectacular hence the high rating, but if it had a better story this could easily be a 10/10 and one of the greatest films ever made. Still worth a watch at least once, especially if your interested in making films yourself someday because their is plenty of mastery here both behind and in front of the camera.

To talk a little more in detail about the acting its superb all around. I'm not always the biggest fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, in fact I think he has given many overrated/underwhelming performances, but he knocks it out of the park here with a subtle and nuanced performance. DiCaprio shows a ton of emotion here despite not having very many lines which is not something I would have thought was in his ability's but I was proven wrong here.

Tom Hardy is exceptional as the main antagonist of the film. He does a good job making his character not feel evil necessarily, but like an ordinary man who's trying to survive and painfully unfeeling towards his fellow man due to his past. Its Hardy's best work since Bronson.

Will Poulter and Domhnall Gleeson are also both totally believable in supporting roles as well. In aiming to steer his dark, fatalistic vision toward something genuinely contemplative and cathartic, Inarritu has managed to appropriate the beauty of Malick’s filmmaking but none of its sublimity — another word for which might be humility. There is plenty of amazement here, to be sure, but all too little in the way of grace.
The Revenant is based, in part, on the 2002 novel The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge by Michale Punke. One of the biggest changes from the source novel is the addition of Hugh Glass' son in the film. Glass' son Hawk is not part of the novel but avery large part of the film. The weakened Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) sees an image of his deceased wife. When the camera returns to his face, Glass slowly turns and looks into the camera lens. The screen goes dark, and his audible breaths continue to be heard as the credits begin. The ending moment recalls the films beginning, which opens with Glass's words, "As long as you can still grab a breath, you fight. You keep breathing." Glass now has no obvious reason to live, and he accepts his mortality, yet he will not invite his death. In this moment with that look into the lens, he has resolved to keep pushing so long as he has breath. Read a full explanation here. In the tale of real-world frontiersman Hugh Glass battling for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by his crew, much of DiCaprio's screen time is spent alone, not talking, letting us know he is enduring endless pain of both the physical and emotional varieties. "It was a different type of challenge for me," DiCaprio told Grantland, because I've played a lot of very vocal characters. It's something that I really wanted to investigate — playing a character who says almost nothing. How do you relay an emotional journey and get in tune with this man's angst ... without words? Read more here. The title of the movie (as well as the source material) is a clue, in that perhaps he died and returned as a revenant, not of a ghoul, zombie or spectral sort, but as a supernaturally-healed man with unfinished business in this life and imbued with the spirit of revenge. (Note: the word "revenant" has evolved slightly since the early 19th century.) The movie is something of an exaggerated (and accelerated) adaptation of a possibly exaggerated account of true events. Nevertheless, it would stand to reason that the real Glass was a very resilient man, as he indeed horribly wounded by a bear and left for dead in a shallow grave, stripped of his tools, but there was no significant disadvantage implied by a winter season. (The risk of freezing to death only existed for the movie version of the characters/people.) Further insight along those lines is explored here. Whichever way the story is interpreted, Glass had the "spirit" to overcome the ailments and obstacles against him.
