Repairing Cracks in Cast Iron Cylinder Heads

A broken engine block can be in a variety of ways. The most visible is freezing in the winter owing to a lack of antifreeze or repeated topping up with ordinary water, diluting the antifreeze. Overheating and impact can cause engine blocks to fracture. If a conrod breaks away from the crankshaft (catastrophic bearing failure or cambelt snapping), it will generally push a hole in the side of the engine block, but if it doesn't, check the block to see if the impact has cracked it.
