In ancient times these colors were considered magical, now we know what determines the color in a gemstone, but despite the scientific explanation of this particular aspect, even today the color of a gem is what most fascinates and excites us. And this is easily explained since each color produces different sensations and has its own meaning.
Valentino red, Ferrari red, red like love, like the most famous paintings by Lucio Fontana, red like roses, like fire, like rage, like the forbidden sign and like the stop light.
Red is surely the color to which an infinite number of meanings and feelings are connected. Loved or hated, red is not a color that produces indifference.
The power of the color red
Red is a primary color capable of creating excitement at the level of increasing the heartbeat, scientific studies have even shown that being in a room with red walls causes an increase in vital functions, aggressiveness and energy. It is no coincidence that, among its various meanings, red indicates strong feelings such as the desire to perform, aggressiveness, the desire to stand out, and passion.

Logically, of all the red gemstones, the one that stands out and goes first in the ranking is the ruby, one of the most loved and coveted gems in the world, but this time I would like to give you an overview of those gems that are less known (but! no less precious for this…!) to give you some alternatives to the red king of precious stones.
Dominican red amber
This particular amber that comes from the Dominican Republic is a truly unique gem. It has optimal crystallization and a translucent appearance. His colors are always saturated and intense. Like all types of amber, it has been formed millions of years ago.
A peculiarity of this gem is that, like Baltic amber, it is possible to find in its interior some inclusions of organic origin (insects, plant residues, bark,...) Amber comes from the resin of ancient pine trees and then solidified and transported by the waters towards the coast.
Red Andesine AAA
The andesine appears on the market for the first time in 2003, therefore it is spoken of as a very new gem. It is a mixture of labradorite and andesine (albite and anorthite). To identify andesine, laboratory tests are necessary to confirm the percentage of each component.
In general, andesine can be distinguished from other red gems of equal brilliance thanks to its faint iridescence, which gives it a slightly metallic effect.
Compared to labradorite which appears opaque, dark and smoky gray in color, andesine has decidedly brighter colors ranging towards red-orange. Its color can sometimes present green and yellow reflections, indeed it varies from red to honey-red.
imperial red citrine
This is one of the rarest quartzes on earth. It comes from the most illustrious mines in the Rio Grande do Sul region of Brazil. This particular area is located in the south of Brazil, on the border with Uruguay.
The color of this gem is so special that it is not classifiable. It has reds and oranges of the most surprising. It is a very rare citrine. It is found in only one area, and only one of 100,000 Madeira citrines is capable of displaying this color saturation.
red tiger eye
Tiger's eye is a variety of quartz that is differentiated by the presence of shading and striations due to needle-like inclusions of crocidolite running parallel within the crystal. They are responsible for giving the gem the "cat's eye" effect also known as "chatoyance". Normally this gem has golden colorations.
Red gems have a particular characteristic and that is that they are very sensitive to heat, indeed the red tiger eye suffers the influence of heating which modifies its color.
At the moment in which the formation process undergoes an increase in temperature, the gem loses its typical color and the golden tones disappear little by little, leaving in its place a warm deep red color.
Queretaro Fire Opal
This variety of opal has a bright red coloration and is 100% natural. These red gemstones come from Mexico, they don't have a very high carat average but their cherry red color never disappoints.
Among all the varieties of fire opal, Querétaro is considered the best for its color and level of crystallization. A particularity of this gem is that, being very sensitive to heat sources, it should not be exposed to drastic changes in temperature.
red spinel
This gem has a long history despite the fact that it was only recognized as such in 1783, until that date (and throughout 19 centuries!) It was confused with the ruby. These red precious stones were taken for rubies because of the proximity of their deposits and because of the presence of chromium in their structure, but in reality, they can be easily differentiated: spinel is monorefringent and ruby is birefringent. The most famous red spinel in the world is set in the English crown, and is known as the Black Prince's Ruby and as its name indicates, this spinel (impressive weight: 170 carats) was considered a ruby for centuries!
