Tenth Century Sankor Madrasa, Timbuktu, Mali. One of the world's earliest universities. Sankor has three mosques, the Zangwerbar Mosque and the famous University of Sadi Yahya Timbuktu. Madrasa (Arabic: مَـدْرَسَـة) means 'school' or 'university' in Arabic and other languages associated with the Muslim people. Islam has been in Africa for so long since its emergence in the Arabian Peninsula that some scholars have argued that it is a traditional African religion. Although the majority of Muslims in Africa are non-sectarian Muslims, Sunnis or Sufis, the complexity of Islam in Africa is reflected in the different ideologies, traditions and voices that are constantly struggling for dominance in many African countries. Islam is not stable in Africa and is constantly changing due to the current social, economic and political situation.
