The new report by Procurement Resource, a global procurement research and consulting firm, looks in-depth into the costs involved in the production of vinyl chloride. The comprehensive report analyses the production cost of the material, covering raw material costs and co-product credit, equipment costs, land and site costs, labour wages, maintenance costs, financing charges, and the depreciation cost. The extensive study describes the step-wise consumption of material and utilities, along with a detailed process flow diagram. The report also assesses the latest developments within the vinyl chloride industry that might influence the costs of production, looking into the capacity expansions, plant turnarounds, and mergers, acquisitions, and investments.

Vinyl chloride is a flammable and colourless gas that evaporates very quickly in the presence of air. It is primarily used in making polyvinyl chloride pipes (PVC pipes), wire coatings, vehicle upholstery, plastic kitchenware, and more. Vinyl chloride is an organochloride, which is a very important chemical for industrial use.
Vinyl chloride is extensively used in essential goods. Thus, its demand throughout the pandemic was expected to grow. Its applications include PVC material and related services used in building and construction, health care, electronics, automobile, and in products ranging from piping and siding, blood rags and tubing to wire and cable insulations, windshield system components, and more. Thus, its downstream demand heavily depends on the growth of these industries. These factors are expected to influence the production cost of vinyl chloride.

The production cost report by Procurement Resource assesses the production of vinyl chloride via ethane and chlorine, via acetylene, via ethylene and chlorine, and via ethylene dichloride. The most common method which is used to produce vinyl chlorate is via ethane and chlorine. In this process, ethane, with controlled proportions of chlorine and oxygen, is introduced into a self-sustaining cracking zone. Ethylene and hydrogen chloride are formed as a chemical mixture, which is quenched with a volatile liquid. This mixture, together with oxygen, passes through a catalytically activated oxyhydrochlorination zone to convert ethylene, hydrogen chloride, and oxygen to ethylene dichloride. The resulted ethylene dichloride is then passed through a second cracking zone for conversion to vinyl chloride and hydrogen chloride.
