Propanol is found as two isomers, namely, 1-propanol and 2-propanol. It is colourless in appearance and liquid in state. Propanol is highly flammable but, it acts as a good solvent for many industries, mainly for cellulose esters and resins, and sometimes as a disinfecting agent. Its applications include soaps, dye solutions, antifreezes, window cleaner, and more.

The propanol demand has been steadily growing even as the chemical industry was adversely affected due to the pandemic. Propanol works as a disinfectant; thus, is used to make sanitisers and sanitising sprays. It is also used to make a number of drugs. Due to the need created by the pandemic and the growing panic amongst people, propanol demand has increased significantly. Propanol also acts as a raw material for the production of a variety of chemicals, which has further helped in increasing the demand for the product. Additionally, countries like the United States, Russia, and China have established more chemical plants in the initial months of 2020 to balance the demand and supply chain in the industry. These factors are expected to influence the production cost of propanol.

The production cost report by Procurement Resource assesses the production of propanol via catalytic hydrogenation. In this process, the propionaldehyde is produced through the oxo process by ethylene undergoing hydroformylation with carbon dioxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst such as rhodium complex. This propionaldehyde is then hydrogenated to produce propanol.
